Yeah, like TSA Pre at PHL, where I still had my belt on (as per the rules), failed the scanner and was then shouted at .. “It’s a metal detector”. Yeah, right! Never knew that!

How did this end up?
I hope OPs friend picked up bag at plane complete with passports and zero drama.

Sorry about the delay, I didn't hear back for quite a while myself.

When asked to gate check his hand luggage, he hastily removed his laptop from the bag, while at the same time storing his passport in the bag. My colleague did let the flight attendants know while on board, and on arrival he was asked to watch the baggage unload to identify his piece. Apparently, it was one of the first out, so he was happily reunited with his identity documents. Then while queuing for immigration he realised he had left his laptop in the overhead lockers (don't ask me why), so he sprinted back towards the plane, only to be eventually caught by a security guard as he was apparently crossing security zones / or just being hysterical... The security guard did escort him back to the plane, where he was reunited with his laptop.

What a drama, but it worked out in the end. I wonder if they do keep statistics on these occurrences.

The more you travel the more f ups you are complicit with.
Just glad your pal made it through ok. There are plenty of sanguine threads on here where things have gone less well.

I remember a colleague extolling the virtues of a large wallet that can store money, passports and all sorts of other things. I told him that as that sounded convenient, what happened if he lost it? "Oh that will never happen," said he from his seat in Club World. We got off the plane and stood in the queue for immigration. He suddenly went white as a sheet. He'd left his Moleskin large wallet on the plane. When he returned, he simply said, "Don't say a word". He wasn't allowed to forget it.

Mrs PAL62V managed to leave her passport in the seat pocket and because we were travelling DUB-LHR she never noticed until we got to baggage reclaim. Very haloful BA staff managed to get the cleaners to take a look as it was that plane’s last flight for the day. They found it and it was duly returned. Couldn’t thank them enough.

These sweet moments are absolutely what we as FFTs should be highlighting to the management staff. I know a lot do already, but a lot also don't. I normally feel great when life gives me an opportunity to big up someone else.

I never will understand anyone who puts everything into their bag and in an overhead locker, but I guess they are also the idiots going down the slides with their carry on luggage.

Having been evacuated from a hotel in the USA in sub zero temperatures due to a fire and lost my passport in the USA on a separate trip I too have this philoposopohy as it was several hours before we could return yet we were able to continue our day.

Take a deep breath and repeat after me:

”While I would like to comply my hand luggage contains a laptop, and other valuables which BA policy says should not be put in the hold. I also have my travel documents, medications and batteries which are loose in this piece of luggage which I would have to find and put in another bag. I do not have any other bag, but if you were able to procure me a suitably sized bag for my laptop and other possessions then I will be able to comply.”

I’m not sure of the efficiency of this, but since I don’t push my luck I’ve only had to use it once Being in group 2 helps.

My understanding is that there is usually no passport checks upon arrival for intra-Schengen flights, it's like domestic travel...

Usually, but not always, and it does not mean that you don't have to have your passport or EU ID card with you. Also the OP's colleague was flying into the Schengen area from outside it, so needed his passport for Schengen entry.

I reckon this must happen on most Ryanair flights now that most bags are gate checked and returned to the carousel.
