Baggage restrictions on flights from London Gatwick to Algiers

I've just seen on the BA website that "due to operational reasons and weight limitations on your flight to Algiers, we have had to limit check-in baggage to a maximum of 3 pieces per customer". I'm intrigued as to what those operational reasons my be? It only seems to apply for flights in June too. Have they perhaps done a big cargo deal for a few weeks or something?

One of the runways at Algiers is completely closed until 10th August, the other is the same length but maybe it is temporarily shortened due to work in progress at the area around the ends where they almost meet? Don't have the charts at hand to check right now but I would imagine it is to do with some take-off performance limitations.

The strange thing is that the restriction applies to LGW-ALG and not ALG-LGW.

Rather a lot on that particular route. Many passengers are UK based Algerians returning home either for good or after several years away.

Definitely only in that direction, or is that all you have been notified about?

Checking in for my DXB-CMB on UL the other week I was amazed at the vast number of large boxes being checked it

In many places it is de rigeur to bring back a stack of serious presents, household goods and so on, when returning to your extended family from your stint as a guest worker.

In the case of CMB note the extensive array of durable white goods available duty free on arrival, in case your luggage allowance doesn't stretch to that new washing machine, fridge freezer or large TV for your in-laws.

The information online was updated on 12 June, before that it said there was insufficient room for all the baggage people were taking from the Uk to Algeria and that you couldn’t select any more luggage than your allowance either online or at the airport.

I guess June is peak period for travelling home.

BA.com is quite clear that it is only on flights to ALG on BA2546, so I presume it's just LGW-ALG.
