Why some cancellations and delays from LHR?

My MAN flight is delayed as are some other domestics.
Zurich, Basel etc. seem to have been cancelled this evening as well.

Can't see anything strike related and other than some wind + chop, nothing looks bad weather wise.

There is a Yellow Weather Warning out for Southern England due to heavy rain showers. Some in Europe too.

Marseille ATC are on strike I think, and there’s a lot of thunderstorms around Europe.

Always worth a look here for the general overview.

There’s a lot of red which means a lot of hour plus slot delays.

There are thunderstorms in Central Europe for the last week. I flew today over one large weather system in Central France and landed just before one in FRA. Several passed around me since and there are more southern Germany/Swiss.
Since Tuesday the German and Swiis airspace have slot delays due to storms.

Which would be fine if the aircraft just flew from LHR to LHR.

There’s a strike in France, and thunderstorms over most of Europe.

Which have caused some significant flooding in the bits of the UK your MAN flight is going over.

Severe delays and mild chaos at FRA and significant delays at ZRH as well this afternoon/tonight. Luckily my LX flight landed more or less on time into fra FRA and my LH flight left FRA only slightly delayed (45 min). Thunderstorms delayed several flights (at least at FRA) - I'm not aware whether this was also the reasons for the ZRH delays.

On the way out of FRA we had to fly around areas with thunderstorms (the capt informed us on the PA after takeoff)

That's great if you want to fly around LHR and land back where you started.

It's wholly irrelevant if weather and an ATC strike are gumming up flights across Western Europe.

Flew back from ABZ on the 18.30 this evening, Capt told us that ATC were slowing flow rates into London airports due to the earlier storms in SE England restricting the amount of traffic.

We eventually only landed 25 mins late, so they seem to have recovered pretty quickly.

Took this video which pretty much points towards Heathrow. You can see an Egypt Air descending, just about! Was taken at about 10pm tonight.

I live 10 miles East of LHR and my brother lives 5 miles East (where we have both lived for the 50 years or so of our lives). We agreed that we have never seen a lightning show as speculator as happened late yesterday evening. Not even in Arkansas or Oklahoma!

Edit: That was Friday night.

I was on the 716 to ZRH which was delayed a little under 2 hours. Boarded on time in order to try to get an earlier slot, but this was not successful. Cabin crew finally opened the bars to serve some drinks when on the ground. Full bar service provided, however I heard from the stand next to us where the BSL flight was also waiting to depart, were only offered water.

On our flight CPH-LHR, the pilot said there were ATC delays over Germany because of a shortage of German ATC staff.

Some of the twitter feeds of lightning over the last couple of days have been pretty impressive.
