Avios on JAL to Seoul or Busan, then compare the two countries. Very little chance of typhoons in that area then.

A fist full of miles and points but no luck in the ballot for me...
Thanks! We had actually started looking at Busan, but were a wee bit put off as it seems to be quite a big city itself, but definitely still on the table!

When I was learning Japanese, I had my phone set to Japanese and obviously Google Chrome sussed out I am an avid reader of points/miles sites in English, so it started recommending Japanese miles hacking sites.

You'll find lots of sites if you googled "マイル修行" (roughly: "miles spiritual training", referring to the Bhuddist rituals a monk might undergo to achieve some goal... if you can imagine meditating underneath a waterfall as analogous to mileage running!)

Here are some:

https://www.seize-one-world.com
https://www.sukesuke-mile-kojiki.net

Here is a typical blog post on a mileage running trip to Okinawa. All the logistics set out clearly in minute detail, and of course like all good Japanese travel-related articles food plays a big part (all with prices listed). And don't forget some beautiful photos of the Japanese landscape.

Here is another, typical analysis piece. Blow-by-blow comparison of JAL and ANA award availability..

I think you get the gist. I love Japan..

I appreciate this thread was setup primarily for the miles based opportunities but I have a question about OW opportunities for getting there.

Looking at the deals at the moment I could get MXP-LHR-HEL-KIX-HND (BA/AY/JL) return for c 1.9k in J, however there would then be the faff of the positioning elements as I would have to get there from EDI. Would yield 600 tp so a sub optimal tp run if you like. This is if course dependant on such a fare being available come October - November time

Leaving from the UK even looking at the J options it's likely that prices will be 3k+ in J.

What looks the best option would be W, the ex EDI options are around 1.5k+. However I note that CX W MAN-HKG-HND is 1.2k. Flight times look good, 2 hour connection going out 4.5 hour going back. Am OWS so will have the benefits of the lounges at HKG.

The question I have is how does CX W on the A350 compare to the BA 777 option going HND. Also in terms of chances of an upgrade is there any difference.

Will try again for the other QF down the line, but any Irish fans out there who have tickets for that and want to start making contingency plans to swap, let me know!
I only got 1 match, Ireland vs. Scotland.
Was hoping to get winner of Group A (Scotland, Ireland Japan) v runner up Group B (NZ, Boks).

hopefully, i will be lucky in the next round...

I will be trying to go in the early part of the tournament (being absent for Mrs PK's birthday will be a bad idea). I only got two matches in the recent ballot but at least they were both over the same weekend in Sapporo. Hoping to get a ticket for the England/USA pool match and something over that weekend before heading home on the Sunday night. Vainly hoping that fares / Avios options might be a little easier in the early stages

For anyone with time on their hands and a sense of adventure, how about the Trans-Siberian Railway (for VVO) or Trans-Mongolian Railway (for PEK) - with onward connections to/from Japan?

How far out are you looking to get these prices? I didn't think prices for Oct/Nov 2019 would be loaded anywhere yet?

I am also looking at a cash price, but using this Oct/Nov as a barometer for my itinerary (EDI-LHR-TOK-HKG-EDI-LHR), it usually prices at around £3k in J.

Then there is the matter of securing tickets for the games. Currently only got Scotland v Russia in the 1st round so am hoping for better luck in the next ballot.

MAnaged to get all the tickets I want from first 2 ballot rounds, just waiting now for any Avios flight bunfight and trying to sort accommodation.

England v Tonga (Sapporo)
England v Tonga (Kobe)
Argentina v Tonga (Osaka)
Scotland v Samoa (Kobe)
Ireland v Russia (Kobe)
England v Argentina (Tokyo)

Will keep trying for a final just in case and will get some kind refundable flight sorted (Avios or other) for a day/weekend trip just in case England get there.

They aren't but have been playing around with ita to get ideas of things. MAN-HKG-HND certainly looks like a good bet. That said there may be a significant bump in the price but hopefully will be going at least W instead of Y

Got 4 matches so far Fij vs Uru, Fra vs Ton, Sco vs Sam and Sco vs Rus. Not bad as we were going for 11. Hopefully get upto at least 7-8 in the next ballot

Right, which one of you beat me to the Tokyo flights on 18/9/19? Got all the way past payment before it failed! Nothing to KIX so ended up with ICN which isn’t too bad a fall back - arrive there 0750 on Thursday, first game we have tickets for so far is in Yokohama on the Sunday; though trying to get Bokke v All Blacks on the Saturday too.

Can relax for a few weeks now until return flights come around!!!

Nice Pullman hotel in Tokyo booked on a cancellable rate for a few nights on the quarter-final weekend. ~£400 including breakfast, and an easy direct train to Shinjuku for the stadium trip

Still a few weeks before flights for those dates open up. Will have to try a joker now if I get ticket for Ireland vs. Japan

How far in advance to redemptions open up on JAL?

Also does that date change depending on whether I use Avios or AA miles?

Good questions. JAL doesn't appear to be selling any tickets for September or October 2019, yet.
