Purchase / Gift Avios with a 50% bonus

Dear Msm2000uk

As you know, if you are a few Avios short of that next reward flight or cabin upgrade, you can purchase the extra Avios required. And if you have a friend or family member in need of a boost, you can even gift them the extra Avios.

What's more, if you purchase or gift Avios between 23 April 00:01 hr BST and 8 May 2018 23:59 hr BST, you'll receive a 50% bonus to top up your purchase – making your Avios go even further.

So don't miss out on a great opportunity to get up to 50% extra when you purchase or gift Avios. That next reward flight or cabin upgrade? It's ready when you are.

I believe the 200k limit is a new high - don't remember them raising the cap that high before. We've come along way from max purchase of 35k per year.

I think I've seen it at 200k in one or two of the more recent sales

I have purchased in the past, but every time the cap goes up... Is it just me being cynical, or are they trying to flog a bunch of Avios, and then maybe do a devaluation or restrict ability?

I'm looking at buying around 85,000 with this promotion as looking to buy points flights on CX & JAL later this year. Works out cheaper to buy more miles than paying BA's surcharsurcharges.

I suppose I'm after a sanity check really, as Ł975 on points is making me think

Indeed - after checking back it does seem that there was a 200k cap in place during the February sale, albeit the max bonus available was 35% IIRC.

I don't think I will buy Avios as I want to see the full extend of Avios Travel Rewards changes in May.

Your call of course, but there is no way I would buy Avios at this price unless I had an immediate use for them which was worth more than the price paid. Buying them now to use later this year seems risky in terms of possible devaluations, limitations on redemption availability or other scheme changes, all of which can happen at any time without notice.

Your risk appetite may be different to mine of course!

Yes, will have to have a think. The main risks I see are potential devaluation and availability.

The flights I'm looking at booking will reduce my Avios balance to near 0, going forward not much air travel at all.

Flexibility in schedule will be key but potential devaluation concerns me somewhat.

How often do these bonuses popup? And are they reliably a 50% bonus?

I expect to need extra avios around August, but I won't know until close to the time, so not sure if I should purchase now or wait.

I don't track them as much nowadays, but historically an IB offer would come along soon afterwards that was better value even allowing for currency fees, etc. You'd need an IB account that was active and had earned a proper Avios to then allow transfer to BA.

Bought 200k on receipt of the email yesterday and immediately booked our J flights back to Blighty for Christmas.
Felt like a result.

Does an avios gift with this promo include an avios transfer (fee waived for GCH) or does it require an actual purchase?
Thanks

Anyone successfully buy these with a US Amex card? I'm getting the error:

'Error: There was a problem with your credit card information. Please try again, or try a different card.'

I know the card info is correct, and it's not close to my limit. I don't want to try a different card as I want the bonus points from amex. I've used this same card before on BA.com for similar amounts with no issue.
