Mid-J 747 Refurbishments
In April 2018 BA announced that they had started a programme to refurbish the cabins on the Mid-J 747-400 fleet. In January 2020, this programme was completed.

As part of the refurbishment all of the aircraft involved have undergone a basic refresh which consisted of:

* Full aircraft deep clean
* Seats in WT/WTP refurbished with new seat foams and cushions as on Super Hi-J aircraft

9 of the aircraft received an ENHANCED refurbishment to bring the cabin up to the same standard as the Super Hi-J 747-400 fleet. This consisted of what is listed above plus:

* New carpets fitted throughout
* All curtains replaced
* New Panasonic IFE fitted in all classes

Note: It was initially believed that the enhanced refurbishment included LED mood lighting throughout, but this is not the case. All retained standard lighting. There were no plans to install WiFi to any Mid-J configured 747-400 aircraft.
Refurbishment Progress
Note: Aircraft that have undergone an ENHANCED refurbishment are shown in red

They'll be no guarantee of IFE being updated on the refreshed birds on your flights so I'd stick to your own decent downloads

I am absolutely shocked BNLY is going to be refurbished a year from now! It was supposed to be retired sometime in 2019. Probably going to be around now until at least late 2021 then. The last G-BNLx in the fleet.

All to do with heavy checks I'd guess. If you're going to go to the expense of doing a heavy check on an aircraft, you may as well keep it for a few years.

The last two BNLs and the first 5 CIVs are all around a 1993/4 vintage. Only a year separates NLY and IVC.

I flew IVT on Sunday LHR-PHX in WT and can confirm that it has been refreshed with new foam and seat covers, new curtains and carpets and new Panasonic IFE.
Interestingly there were lots of problems with the IFE and even after several full cabin resets there were a large number of films that simply wouldn't play. Hopefully these were just teething problems as I've never had that problem on other planes with the system.

Hope this helps

Looks like I have a 1 in 8 chance of getting the new IFE on my trip back to the UK from LAX over Christmas. 2 out of 16, or 2 out of 17 if BNLP hasn’t headed off to the boneyard by the 20th of Dec.

Are you flying direct LAX-LHR? If I recall correctly all 747’s used on that route are refurbished super high j aircraft, with mood lighting, panasonic IFE, the full works basically so you should have nothing to worry about.

It appears around Xmas the BA282 does indeed have the Mid-J aircraft scheduled

No you're right - there's a higher risk of shabby aircraft with ancient IFE !

Same here. We’ll also be traveling on 282 week before Christmas. Seems in F the only possible difference is the IFE and possibly not as fresh looking?

I'm on today's BA275 LHR to LAS, annoyingly the tail hasn't appeared on flightradar24 (even though tomorrow's has!). Don't suppose anyone knows which aircraft is flying?

Thanks for the super speedy reply! Looks like an unrefurbished bird :-(
And there I was hoping for WiFi... My friends on VS43 are currently enjoying fast (ish) internet in the sky.
