Mid-J 747 Refurbishments
In April 2018 BA announced that they had started a programme to refurbish the cabins on the Mid-J 747-400 fleet. In January 2020, this programme was completed.

As part of the refurbishment all of the aircraft involved have undergone a basic refresh which consisted of:

* Full aircraft deep clean
* Seats in WT/WTP refurbished with new seat foams and cushions as on Super Hi-J aircraft

9 of the aircraft received an ENHANCED refurbishment to bring the cabin up to the same standard as the Super Hi-J 747-400 fleet. This consisted of what is listed above plus:

* New carpets fitted throughout
* All curtains replaced
* New Panasonic IFE fitted in all classes

Note: It was initially believed that the enhanced refurbishment included LED mood lighting throughout, but this is not the case. All retained standard lighting. There were no plans to install WiFi to any Mid-J configured 747-400 aircraft.
Refurbishment Progress
Note: Aircraft that have undergone an ENHANCED refurbishment are shown in red

Flew on CIVD to LAS a couple of weeks ago so I can confirm that the cabin refresh was done but, as expected, no IFE upgrade yet. I'll update the wiki.

CIVO is the next planned refurb in September. There won’t be any before this with the busy summer flying programme in full swing.

I’m flying to LAS in January in CW, would the seat map already reflect the 22 row super high J If I was schedule to be on a refurbed plane or is it too far out ?

It is unlikely that a Super J (rows 12-22) will appear on the LAS route but you maybe lucky enough to get a fully refurbished Mid J (rows 17-20), the first one goes into the hangers next month.

Yes it would, but you shouldn't expect to see a Super-J bird flying to LAS - highly unlikely except if there's an operational issue.

More likely to be a refurbed mid-J bird - with or without new IFE - which is indistinguishable in the seat map from the non-refurbed version. Pot luck which of those you'll get in January.

Apologies , I was ignorant to the fact that the two were different. I am hoping given some of the comments around the 747 cabin quality , to fly on a refreshed variant. Paid Ł1500 a head for the tickets so I’d like it to be a good experience!

Not quite sure what this has to do with the 747 refresh! This is a very standard routing on BA for many people - and providing the LHR-JNB service leaves on time or there abouts there will be no issues.

I can't see your status from your profile, but if Silver or higher grab some nice seats on the Upper Deck, if lower status I'd consider paying. It will give you a far better experience. Ł1,500 direct return to Las Vegas in Club with lounge access at both ends (T3 especially nice) is a pretty good deal. I grabbed the same, albeit Ł150 ex INV saving on the APD. I also got into F for a few Avios on the return.

I'd recommend booking these as a holiday in the future if you haven't, with one night car or hotel. This was you can pay a deposit, and if you see a better deal or plans change, you can rebook again and just lose the deposit ...

Lots of information about connecting at JNB here: JNB / Johannesburg Airport - Connections, Facilities, Layovers, etc.. Nothing to worry about if it is a genuine connection as there should be no trouble getting a seat on a later flight on that route.

Looks like I am extreamly lucky and got CIVD down to CPT tomorrow. Has anyone flown this since its refresh? Is noticeably better? I am flying F.

I am flying to Vancouver in mid March 2019 in premium economy. Is it likely the 747 will be a refurb?

Quite excited as not flown long haul for 10+ years, hoping for a pleasant experience.

Welcome to Flyertalk and welcome to the BA forum Swiftly. It's good to see you here and I hope we will see more of you. Welcome on board.

You can tell whether you are in a refreshed 747 at the moment by looking at the seat map in your booking. If the first rows of World Traveller Plus are 11 / 12, then that is the older cabin with poor IFE, though as indicated in the rest of the thread this may have refreshed. If WTP starts at 33 then it's the newer cabin and better IFE. To be honest, it's probably too soon to say, a lot could happen with the equipment between now and March, so it may be worth having another look at this in the near year.
