EUROCONTROL have sent out a Twitter summary of their telco yesterday. The point to bear in mind here is that delays are usually on top of any cancellations, and can in turn feed cancellations from out-of-place aircraft.

Update from French strike teleconference: Expect 30% reduction in flights to/from CdG, Orly, Beauvais, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille, Lyon & Nantes. Greatest impact expected to be in west and south of France

Conflating the other problem, poor weather on the USA Eastern Seaboard, these are the cancellations departing LHR at the moment. Includes non BA services.

We’re in Barcelona at the moment having made it through the snow on Sunday, we were due to fly back to EDI tomorrow but have been emailed and told that we’re rebooked on friday’s 07.50 flight. We’re on a BA holiday and they’ve said to book and pay for an extra night and to keep receipts for dinner etc, is there any guidance on what can be claimed for the room and dinner?

Are there likely to be more cancellations than those announced already? I'm supposed to be on one of the services scheduled to operate on Thursday but not feeling confident!

Normally BA pay up to £200 per room per night without argument, though I wouldn't deliberately head that direction unless it's unavoidable. And reasonable amount for meals, just keep alcohol off the bill (though if you have status they may overlook the odd glass of wine). Since the Hilton is selling at 165€ last minute tonight I presume you wouldn't have a problem. However since you are on a BA Holiday, and assuming this is one of their hotels, I'm sure BA will pick up the tab anyway. If you fancy testing out your negotiation skills then you could see if you can persuade the hotel to just extend BA's rate or some halfway house, hotels are actually quite used to haggling, even if it isn't very English. However to reiterate, it's not essential to do this. In other cases BA sends a fax to the hotel and covers it all internally.

The point of the pro-active cancellations is to take enough strain out of the system so that the remaining schedule works. And generally this tactic does deliver, on the whole, though there can still be delays and cancellations. And you do have the option to also be pro-active, and request to move your travel to other days if that in any way helps. But ultimately very few things in life are guaranteed.

On the evidence of just one flight, French airspace isn't closed at the moment, I've just come off the BIO-LHR service this evening and as shown below, the aircraft routed through the middle of Britanny, betwixt Saint-Nazaire and Cherbourg, and arrived 14 minutes early despite a 64 mph head wind.

Actually, there are two distinct strikes: there is a public sector strike on the 22nd (which is the one affecting, inter alia, air traffic controllers, trains, etc...) and there is a separate Air France strike on the 23rd.

Thanks for your reply cws we’ve got a good rate from our hotel and just managed to book the last available room BA holidays say we’ve to claim it back as they won’t pay the hotel direct but that’s fine.

Looks like you routed via T9 which is an Oceanic route that avoids French airspace, a regular route from the Canary Islands to the UK when DSNA are on strike.
