Why is this 789 at MAD

G-ZBKG is currently sat on stand at MAD.

Anybody know why? Just curious...

Because a couple of BA pilots flew it there.

The more serious answer is that BA schedule a long haul aircraft to MAD each day. Sometimes 777 sometimesbthe 789. IB also operates daily A340 on this route as well.

It’s fairly popular with FTers and there is another thread on it elsewhere.

BA are using longer haul planes on the MAD route at the moment once a day - the BA460. Alternates between the B767, B789, B777....

Ah... this I did not know! I thought the largest aircraft on that route was the 767.

Thanks for the clarification.

It's operated BA460, which is routinely operated by a 777 or 787 recently. It looks like that has replaced BA458 as the once-a-day heavy rotation for cargo purposes.

BA460/461 is a 777 or 787 currently and BA456/457 is a 767. 2 daily BA wide body aircraft plus Iberia A346 daily too

More interestingly, its actually gone tech, and I'm supposed to be flying on it back to LHR. Looks like they've been repairing some damage to the upper forward fuselage. The engineers are now conducting a comprehensive visual inspection of the entire exterior (wings, tail etc). Lightning strike on the inbound? We are currently delayed by an hour....

Out of curiosity, why do they operate this? Ba seems to operate one per day, IB too. Finnair also operate an a350 once per day to london. Is this a deliberate effort just coincidental operational need?

There are some suggested answers in the main thread: 777 on MAD route S17 - they seem to centre on the word "cargo".
