Tier Points on Upgrades

Hi folks,

Quick question. If you upgrade a flight, do you get the tier points of the new class? Upgrade by cash? Upgrade by Avios?

Thanks

Upgrade by cash, you get the upgraded TPs/Avios

Upgrade by Avios, you get the original TP/Avios (although occasionally you can get an IT error in your favour, and get credited the upgraded cabin. Don't expect this however.....)
T8191 and TPRun like this.

BA is one of the generous airlines in the industry with regards to this ^

Other airlines they take your money and put you in the upgraded seat, however, they credit the original fare booked.

I believe IAG Iberia only credits TP's based on original fare if you purchase a cash upgrade

I've had a couple of experiences where the upgrade with Avios gets me the upgraded cabin TPs and Avios but I think this is luck rather than protocol

It is. Sometimes the ancient and oft-criticised BA IT systems work in our favour - nice when it happens, but not something to rely on.

Has there ever been a recorded instance of BAEC clawing back such TP/Avios? I've certainly never read of one in my short time here, but maybe it has happened?

Best one for me was when I travelled in Economy with MH and got an operational upgrade. I was credited Business Class TP”s 😊

Correct. IB does not credit at the higher rate for cash upgrades.

that’s good to know - I was going to upgrade my IB trips with cash to get more TPs, will steer clear now (unless feeling fancy)

AA cash upgrades don't credit higher TPs either

I hope not! Upgraded WTP to CW return recently and CW tier points were credited which helps enormously to getting us to Gold this year!

My last 5 CW flights (UUA from WTP on 3 separate occasions) have credited full CW tier points.

I thought it might be a change of policy. I have been keeping quiet about it.

I upgraded WT+ to CW (for the wife and me) and got the tier points and Avios for CW. They also appear to have not (yet) deducted the Avios used This was over four months ago, so one is hopeful they never will
We were also op-upped (WT+ to CW) on the outbound!

(cue a cold sweat that BA will see this and hunt down their Avios)
