If the forum will forgive me the indulgence of bumping my own post, I wonder if anyone had any info on the current situation at LGW.

Distilled to a single point it is this - is it now possible to do airside AUPs, e.g in the Flounge or is the landside ticket desk my only opportunity?

Just an interesting note - I was in WTP from Boston the end of last month and sat next to someone who mentioned she got an offer to upgrade to CW for $950. I got offered the same upgrade for $799. It made me wonder about variable pricing and what the criteria might be...

Last April at ORD (to LHR) WT+ to CW for $300, the flight departing around 5.25pm local time.
I got it, of course, such a bargain for a night flight.

I was told at MXP the price of an AUP can vary depending on the underlying ticket fare. I did not report that here as I assumed the desk agent was wrong. Perhaps a new policy is developing?

An alternative explanation for your experience is the AUP prices dynamically depending on the number of remaining unsold seats in the upgrade cabin, and your seat-buddy asked after you had, and someone else had said ‘yes’ in between times. Pure speculation on my part I should emphasise.

Was just quoted a record-breaking £95 GBP for an AUP to BHD. This high price was, according to the desk agent, ‘because you are on a hand baggage only fare’. So, it seems my experience in MXP was not a one-off, and we can expect an AUP differential based on HBO or standard economy in future.

Updating the wiki is going to be fun...

Was offered DXB-LHR WT+ to Club World for £460 this morning. Declined, and went straight to the BA lounge, and when they scanned my boarding pass for entry, it double beeped and I received a complimentary upgrade to Club 👍

LGW to YYZ, WTP to CW, £284

Accepted - possibly foolishly as the WTP cabin is looking significantly oversold. My feeble justification was:
  • I'd used my op-up luck up on the way down from GLA (a rammed A319 as the following flight had been cancelled)
  • The best seats were all gone, and only a few decent ones remained
  • Frantic refreshing had produced no result
  • The FlyerTalk mantra of "pay for the cabin you want" (tho I suppose it is more accurately "the one you are prepared to travel in")
Of course I'll never know if I'd have got it for free! At least it's a few more Avios and TPs

Any recent AUP CW to F experiences ex-JNB? My JNB-LHR tomight is showing F7 right now and while i have a good upper deck seat, I would love to move up to F. Figuring with the weak Rand that this could be a decent value but did not see anything remotely recent being reported in the thread.

I was pleasantly surprised at the cost for my AUP but as noted, there would need to have been a fair few op-ups anyway (my WTP seat didn't last 5 minutes before being filled!). So perhaps in these cases BA pitch the AUP at a price where it becomes more of an impulse buy? Had it been say £500 then I'd have almost certainly declined and taken my chances with the op-up lottery, but at the lower price I bite and they get something extra.

Prices do change on the same route.

For SYD-LHR, I've had quotes ranging from AUD$1200 to 2185 in the last year for W to J, based on their printouts they have behind their counters. BA airport manager said the pricing were dictated by back office/revenue people.

For LHR-SYD, they range from GBP485 to 800 over a longer period.

My trip last week, it was oversold in Y and W and J, but no AUPs available but there were a lot of op-ups (except me)

Answer to my own question, CW to F on JNB-LHR was 7,000 Rand or about $US575. I grabbed 1A in what appears to be a pretty empty cabin. Good deal for a very long flight, too bad the F lounge in JNB isnt better.
