Winter Storm Grayson (US East Coast) 4th/5th - Possible Disruption

A winter (or 'bomb') cyclone is forecast for the US East Coast for the 4th and 5th Jan with possible disruption expected all down the East Coast, including well into the Southern coastal states. Both AA and BA are allowing rebooking to avoid the below affected airports:
  • Albany, New York (ALB)
  • Bangor, Maine (BGR)
  • Boston, Massachusetts (BOS)
  • Burlington, Vermont (BTV)
  • Hartford, Connecticut (BDL)
  • Manchester, New Hampshire (MHT)
  • Newark, New Jersey (EWR)
  • Newburgh, New York (SWF)
  • New Haven, Connecticut (HVN)
  • New York Kennedy, New York (JFK)
  • New York LaGuardia, New York (LGA)
  • Long Island, New York (ISP)
  • Portland, Maine (PWM)
  • Providence, Rhode Island (PVD)
  • Westchester, New York (HPN
  • Charleston, South Carolina (CHS)
  • Fayetteville, North Carolina (FAY)
  • Florence, South Carolina (FLO)
  • Gainesville, Florida (GNV)
  • Greenville, North Carolina (PGV)
  • Hilton Head, South Carolina (HHH)
  • Jacksonville, Florida (JAX)
  • Jacksonville, North Carolina (OAJ)
  • Myrtle Beach, South Carolina (MYR)
  • New Bern, North Carolina (EWN)
  • Norfolk, Virginia (ORF)
  • Raleigh, North Carolina (RDU)
  • Savannah, Georgia (SAV)
  • Tallahassee, Florida (TLH)
  • Washington Reagan, Washington, D.C. (DCA)
  • Wilmington, North Carolina (ILM)
Although BA have not issued a public travel alert as of yet, BA are aware of the issue at the call centres (successfully re-routed my SAN-NCL to avoid JFK at 18:00 GMT).

Safe travels everyone!

Just had a message that Thursday's 09.40am BA175 LHR to JFK is now delayed by 3 hours. I hope this may be a precaution so I intend to arrive on time and wait for better news.

Just got off the phone with BA, and the agent said that there was no policy to allow rerouting to avoid NYC airports. I am connecting at JFK on the 4th. As our flight shows as still scheduled there is nothing that contact centers staff can do.

Presumably IAD is an accidental omission from that list by BA/AA rather than a deliberate one?

I'd imagine there will be something on ba.com soon, hopefully!

I have just checked ba.com and small example with a few few flights cancelled. (not sure how to list them fully, sorry!)

Thursday 4th January are cancelled for weather reasons:

Flight cancelled

We’re very sorry, this flight has been cancelled due to adverse weather conditions.BA 117 - LHR to JFK
BA 115 - LHR to JFK
BA 176 - JFK to LHR
BA 172 - JFK to LHR
BA 213 - LHR to BOS
BA 215 - LHR to BOS

Off to LAS this week, hopefully it'll cause no issues flying over/around it...

PETER01, my flight is still scheduled and BA does not have a policy that allows rerouting to avoid the listed airports.

Well United has a hub at IAD and also excludes it from their waivers so presumably not an accidental omission as other airlines don't include it either.

Fingers crossed it stays that way then. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more cancellations as it's a monster storm crawling up the east coast. Good luck to everyone travelling!

I don't see RIC there either. Maybe far enough off the coast?

Ah OK. But DCA is included I see, annoying!

YYZ is not on the US east coast. Forecast for no snow at all the 4th and 5th might also affect the lack of cancellations. Ditto for Montreal.
