Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post #4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under Ł300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread, MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under Ł500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for Ł520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Sorry in pulling in an old response. I am looking into climbing the BA ladder with lifetime Gold as my new job puts me in J for anything > 4 hours.

With regard IB counting, if it is IB code operated by Vueling does it counts? or it has to be IB code and operated?

for IB it has to be IB marketed and operated. IB marketed and VY operated wouldn’t count.

Just a quick update on my progress towards booking my first TP run... it isn't good.

I decided to call AA and see if they can help me book my itinerary. Again, very helpful agent tried but was stopped by the system... she couldn't book more than 6 sectors on the one PNR. Splitting the trip sent the price out of acceptable range.

So I am a bit stuck. I saw that the UL DXB-CMB-CGK was great value so I am looking at doing a LHR-DXB using cash and Avios and then 3 x DXB-CMB-CGK almost b2b but on different PNRs with a night in the Premier Inn at DXB between them. I might stick myself in the pod hotel in Jakarta just for fun! The trip is a little less interesting and would take a bit longer but I would get to Gold for not a lot more than Silver going West.

The return stop at CMB is just 1hr 5 mins but I heard that it is a very small airport and making that connection should be fine (I'll be HBO). Fingers crossed... I'd have to do it 3 times without a hitch. What are the chances?

I am determined to get something booked today. I have spend days on this... I am getting a bit tired of looking at Matrix now!

I haven’t paid much attention to that particular run, but I know that several folk from here have done it... and if memory serves, with some mixed results for an Asian B2B (which I think was at CMB).

I think several have managed it, though it is right, but I recall at least one person not making it - possibly @teledude or @KARFA? I am on my phone so finding it hard to find the right thread/posts where this was discussed. I would be cautious and consider waiting until you’ve checked this.

My general rule is that if I’m getting a bit “trigger happy” on an airline fare (or any other purchase!) after a prolonged period, it probably means I may not be approaching it entirely rationally, and I would take a break before committing. There is a definite psychological ‘thrill’ of getting a good deal out of a fare (I definitely felt it when I did several trips to TLL, which wasn’t even a TP run really).

That's simply incorrect - you can have up to 16 sectors on an e-ticket.

B2B at CGK is possible, but not very easy - a lot of things need to line up for it to work. @teledude was the one where it didn't work!

i wince when I hear this, you seem to have got another agent determined to talk out of their bumhole sadly. There is no such limit. If you go on aa.com I think it has space for 6 city pairs - each city pair can include more than one sector - so a search for city pair NYC-SFO should show the JFK-LAX-SFO option. There is a sector limit but I think it is something like 16 or more, well above what a normal exEU booking to the US would have. I have no idea why the agent couldn’t simply take the flight numbers and dates and price it up. It’s really disappointing to see yet another useless booking agent.

Did using ita PowerTools and transferring it to aa.com not work? Hope you get it booked soon.

Ah, thanks for the clarification @flashware. Never mind me, @snaxmuppet, I’m sure someone can fill you in on CMB B2B possibilities

Tried again this morning (phew! At least I am persistent!).

Foiled again...

This time a different excuse... he insisted that all sectors on a single PNR must be the same fare class. In my case I priced up the trip as mostly in I but with two sectors in J. He insisted that their system would only price up the trip if the class was the same for all sectors... in this case J. Needless to say... over doubled the price.

Tried powertools... using settings I set the American currency to GBP but it came out in Euros. Perhaps I could put it on hold but I am more interested in going East now and going for Gold instead of Silver.

Thanks for all your help. I didn't think it would be this difficult to be honest.

That is good advice and this is why I haven't just gone ahead and booked it regardless. But my wife is getting fed up with me spending so much time researching that I have to either pull the trigger or forget it... at least for a while. The thing is that I have gone through this loop quite a few times in the past 6 months or so. Each failed because I couldn't find anything to suit my available dates. I am, by nature, a very cautious beast when it comes to spending thousands of pound on anything

Do these idiots just sit in front of ba.com or aa.com and spew out random reasons why the system cannot book what the passenger wants?

I have been mostly lucky getting knowledgable agents recently and usually I will tell them from the start the exact fare code I want them to use as well as the booking code for each individual sector. In some cases even the agent is surprised that it prices out and at the low cost compared to other tickets they have been selling. In the case of a useless agent, and you can mostly tell from the start if this is the case, I usually find a polite excuse for stopping the call and try my like with somebody else.

If you do have the opportunity to put a booking on hold with aa.com, you should do so. You can then call an agent to issue the ticket but ask to be billed in the currency of your choice.

Probably, I was on with the Japan line [India I think] last night to snag a JAL booking on a multipartner award and was being told that Avios couldn't be used for round the world trips - obviously complete nonsense. Had I been more awake, I would have pointed out that this was indeed the most direct way of reaching each of the destinations desired. Fortunately the the desired seats were still available this morning, and the Gold line sorted everything promptly.

Bring it up in ITA Copy and paste the whole summary screen into bookwithmatrix.com rather than powertools and it will be bookable via priceline or Flight Network or even AA.com you might have to suck it up and pay in dollars, If it gets to the payment screen on AA.com and is in dolars just fill in your address as normal pick California and 90210 as the zip and its always worked for me

Thanks... yes, I am sure I could get it ticketed through a travel agent via bookwithmatrix but I really didn't want to use a TA... neither did I want to use a GBP credit card and pay in anything other than GBP. Thanks anyway but I have now planned a run for Gold to the East

I am planning:

LHR - DXB BA Y (part pay with Avios)

DXB - CMB - CGK UL
CGK - CMB - DXB UL

All in J.

Doing that 3 times with a 1 night stopover in DXB. Hotels are so cheap in CGK that I am staying a night there each time through also to save me worrying about the tight b2b.

Then:
DXB - LHR Y (the return from my outbound)

Then to get up to the 4 qualifying flights I am doing:

LHR - AMS - LHR with BA in Y (only Ł60 cash!)

Then home for a well-earned rest but as a Gold member!

With so much slack built in (an overnight hotel stay at each DXB and CGK) I am hoping that it is a more relaxed trip than say, with b2bs at CGK or DXB. I have the time and the hotels aren't expensive.

I am booking the BA legs on ba.com and the UL legs direct with UL as a set of 3 DXB - CGK returns on separate tickets.

Can anyone see any issues I may have missed?
