Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Some information on how to use ITA matrix is in post #4 of this thread (or just click here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest along with UK domestic returns. Additionally you may find that trips in to mainland Europe require a one night stay whereas the cheapest domestic CE returns do not have any minimum stay so can be booked as a same day return. If doing a back to back AMS and JER can be easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround - more information can be found in the back to back thread listed in the forum dashboard. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). UK domestic route, Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seem the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post of this thread, MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports).

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520.
DUB-LHR-HEL return (or return to LHR) is currently a very efficient way of hitting 200-240 TPs

Flying out of NCL (or thereabouts), what's going to be the cheapest run that they could do in the two week grace period until the 22nd that would earn them that remaining 30TPs to get them to silver for the next year? Thanks!
The 7.50pm flight from NCL to LHR on 16th June is £121 one way in Club Europe netting 40 TPs. Whilst part pay with avios is not the greatest use of them if they are awash with them after their trip they could use 12,500 to knock £70 off to bring it down to £51. There is a National Express bus from Heathrow bus station at 11.40pm to Newcastle for around £16.

Whilst it might not be the best use of their avios or the most comfortable journey home, it does get them the needed points for around £67 in cash.

Hi all,
I have the next 3 weekends free, and want to get 160-200 (or more) TP to keep my balance ticking over.

What is the best approach to looking for a TP run over 2 weekends using nested tickets?

are there airports which are generally cheaper for a ticket into heathrow, ???-LHR-??? ?

Thanks

Where are you based? Id start by looking at NCL/LBA/LUX as all easy b2bs with nested tickets

im 20 mins from LHR, with LGW being viable as well.

ill have a look at LUX.
Whats throwing me a bit is that with nested tickets, i could do open jaw, like, Ticket 1 = LHR-AMS LUX-LHR ticket 2 = AMS-LHR-LUX
This would give me one weekend in AMS and one in LUX, rather than going to the same place twice in a row.

its just finding where is cheapest to fly back from.

Ill keep playing around with Matrix.

thanks

Long time viewer but wanting to take the plunge…

I am travelling across North America by train so thought this a good opportunity to pay a little extra and try to get silver ( I will need some extra BA flights as well) so open jaw required.

I have come up with this itinerary which looks good to me with a variety of aircraft and the 777 from MIA to LAX. The AA fare coming back requires AA metal over the pond and 660 Tier points I think.

Bucharest (OTP) to London (LHR) — Wed, Jul 11, British Airways 887,320, J

London (LHR) to Miami (MIA) — Thu, Jul 12, American 6160,747, I

Miami (MIA) to Los Angeles (LAX) — Thu, Jul 12, American 396,777, I

Los Angeles (LAX) to Phoenix (PHX) — Thu, Jul 12, American 3258, RJ700, I

Boston (BOS) to Washington (DCA) — Mon, Jul 23, American 2169, 190, I

Washington (DCA) to Philadelphia (PHL) — Mon, Jul 23, American 4584, 175, I

Philadelphia (PHL) to London (LHR) — Mon, Jul 23, American 736, 330, I

London (LHR) to Inverness (INV) — Tue, Jul 24, British Airways 1468, 319, J

AA ILN8C8S4 BUH to PHX

AA ILN8C8S4 BUH to PHX

12,920 total miles£1,266.33

Using Book with Matrix the AA option came up with the results despite claiming there was a change although could not spot it.

How do I get a “reservation” without paying in USD so I can call and pay in GBP there does not seem to be an option on the payment page.

Thanks to all on here for peaking by interest!

Copy and paste the entire itinerary into here - export it to AA.com

Hold reservation - call up AA and pay over the phone. All fairly painless

Sorry.

Was expecting a reference of some sort to give them when I call up so they could bring it up on their screen, or do I have to list out all the flight details.

You do it all yourself on AA.com - if you follow my steps above you will create a full reservation on AA.com - at the payment page - select "hold" this will then immediately send you an email which will have the record number (6 characters) which you then call AA and give to the operator who shall retrieve the held reservation

Only if all of the flights are on AA flight numbers (including codeshares). If using BA, AY, IB flight numbers, the Hold is not possible....

It is a fairly important point, that fails to get raised when giving out this advice.
mikeyfly and LHR FLYER like this.

I have pointed it out many times in this thread. It causes numerous PMs from people who cannot get the hold function to work on AA.com, usually based on the incomplete advice provided in this thread.

About AA.com, an alternative to the "Hold", in order to pay with other currencies than USD, is to book with ITA Matrix Power Tools. With that one can select the UK or most EU AA websites.
I had to use this for my OTP-PHX instead of BookwithMatrix as AA.com US didn't had the Hold option (no AA code only) didn't work with a foreign CC and I wanted to book directly with the airline.

Anyone here able to help me with a CAI-HNL over new year? I’ve been trying all night to no avail.

Ideally leave 27/28th December and leave HNL on 1st Jan to fit in a LAX-PTY run before returning home 6/7th Jan.
