Possibly an incredibly dumb question, but I'll risk it. If you have 4 787's with engine issues, but say 4 good engines, can you get two of them flying. Or is switching an engine as bigger task as repairing one. Are left and right mix and match?

I believe that there's no issue with where you mount an engine; they're not left or right. During the lifetime of any airframe, it will be likely to have quite a few different engines mounted; and any particular engine is likely to get to know a number of airframes rather well.

Some of the news reports linked to above seem to substantiate what I'd been suspecting: there simply aren't enough serviceable engines available in the whole world to keep all the aircraft flying, even with the possibility of switching engines around.

Just noticed that upcoming BA228 BWI-LHR on 16 Dec has been changed to a 787-9 - somewhat unusual (in my limited experience) more than a week ahead (couple of days maybe...).

See that BA98 tonight is delayed until tomorrow morning, wonder if this is related. Taking this flight in a few days time so a little anxious...

I think BA scheduling are starting to shuffle things around with quite a bit of forward planning based on what I can only presume is a long range remediation plan by RR. My April 2018 PHL>LHR Flight has just changed to a B788 from a B789 (the reinstated B69/68 flight), so I’m guessing they are looking at aircraft service intervals / expected availability through the next 6 months to try and match routes with available aircraft without a complete change of aircraft type if possible!

Hopefully they are able to pull off the production line at RR

A July 2018 788 flight MCT to LHR has just been changed to a 789, which suggests at least 7 months of schedule juggling.

It really doesn't.

The 77W can do anything the 788 can do and the A380 can go further than any 787 variant. Both would cost more doing it though and where do the they get the spare A380 from, and how do they sell 200+ extra seats. Easier to just cancel a rotation.

While that may be unrelated (and probably is) ... industry is nevertheless suggesting that the backlog in repairs / mods is unlikely to be over anytime soon and may get a bit worse before it gets better.

ISTR that this is part of the problem: they can't. R-R must keep supplying the newbuilds on the Boeing production line, so there are no spare engines anywhere.

As GE/RR engines share a common interface on the 787 it may be a shrewd marketing move by GE to offer loan engines on a power by the hour basis to airlines who are caught up in this, assuming they have spare capacity of course.

How could that work for an airline that doesn't already use these GE engines? It would have to start from scratch to re-train and re-equip for a completely new engine before it could even start using them.
