BA American Express card fee to make a BA booking

I was astounded to have 40 added to my proposed booking with BA for using 'their own' card. Maybe I shouldn't have been but extras again for seat reservations would exceed another 100 that would basically have used up the savings I could make with my AVIOS. Seems crazy, so back to ITA Matrix to see what they are suggesting.

BA currently charge 1% fee in CC transactions to a maximum of 20 per person. Used to be a flat rate 5 per person.

There are proposals to limit card charges coming in Januarys but not heard anything in this recently.

It is, of course, not "BA's card" ... its still an Amex. The pretty logo and marketing angle doesn't avoid that fact. And, as long as organisations are permitted to levy charges for using ANY card, for which they have to pay the card-provider Merchant Fees, we are stuck.

As noted above, that's about to change. I have no doubt BA will slide those small sums into their fare matrix in a similar timescale, because cumulatively that's a LOT of income they will now have to recoup.

It's not BA's card by any means. Just a cobranded marketing gimmick.

The fees are a charge you pay on any booking (for the moment). Man countries eliminated these a long time ago and many still have them and will.

The argument for the fees is that the merchant, in this case BA, pays an interchange fee to Amex. Either that fee is paid by those who choose to use a CC or the fee is not billed as a pass through and is thus part of the merchant's cost structure and is thus spread among all customers as part of the fee they pay for their ticket.

The UK, as of January, has sided with burying the fee so it is carried by all.

Just a reminder these fees only apply to people selecting the UK on the card payment screen.

My BA Amex often feels a strong connection to Ukraine when paying for BA flights and delivers a tidy saving

I have read about this. I have booked a cruise for Alaska and paid a deposit of 600 plus 2.5% MasterCard fee 15 a few months ago. The balance (3,500)is payable in mid February 2018. The agent said I would have to pay the 2.5% card fee! I hope this is not true and I should not have to pay this outrageous fee. Will wait and see ...
