I would think the newer the systems are, the faster they will be. This may be an advantage of BA introducing WiFi so late on in the game compared to the other competition.

The speeds are limited primarily by the satellites not the onboard equipment. Ku band is good for 70-100Mbps and is what Gogo/BA use. Ka band is used by a few airlines and is theoretically faster but it would require entirely new hardware.

Out of curiosity, how does that work? Clearly satellites can serve multiple connections at once, so surely (like with some laptops) couldn't a single aeroplane stack up multiple receivers? Obviously latency is limited by the satellite and technology, but speed usually not...

In theory yes, and some do support channel bonding. Performance will improve as more satellites go up as satellite internet is very susceptible to interference and signal fade.

BA have repeatedly said this was the reason why they held off installing wifi. Having used the painful wifi on a QR 787 recently (who on earth pays the bandit charges for it once you've used the free allowance??) I think that was the right decision.

Does anyone know if BA are going to be showing the live Sports Channel Sport 24 on their wi-fi enabled flights?

Have watched several live events on other carriers and rather enjoy it!

So I think you are on G-CIVR - which is listed in the wiki - and that you are currently 34,000 feet above Castlebar, Co. Mayo or thereabouts.

And so all the 787 have not been fitted? I thought the service was just turnt off but that the wifi was built on when delivered!

As far as I'm aware Gogo haven't yet got the go ahead for the 2Ku to be fitted on 787's.
In September Runway Girl Network wrote:-
" The Boeing executive also confirmed that Gogo 2Ku is in line for offerability on the 787, noting that the airframer is seeking to accommodate “any airline using the Gogo [2Ku] service”. This is in sync with Gogo management’s assertion that the firm is making good progress for linefit on Boeing platforms, and expects the first “Boeing factory fit install on a 787” to take place around the end of this year, with “full linefit optionality in 2018 or 19 for Boeing”. "

BA's next 787 is due in March so that may be the first of the fleet to be factory fitted.
