28 Sep : Amadeus Altea global outage, BA systems affected.

I have an existing Amex 2-4-1 booking in business class (there was no First available when I booked at 355 days out). Today, BA.com is showing availability in First but when I call to make the change the phone agents are telling me that there is a global system outage and nothing can be booked by phone.

Does anyone know if I can do anything to grab the upgrade on-line or am I just going to have to call back every 30 minutes to see if the system is fixed?

I'm getting this and there have been a few tweets by customers saying it's all down. (may be a short thing as by the 30 minute comment above)

We're sorry, but ba.com is very busy at the moment, and couldn't deal with your request. Please do try again - if it still doesn't work, it may be better to try again at another time

Looks like the trouble might not be restricted to BA. Air France seems to be having similar issues.

I've been trying to do a multi-city booking for 20 minutes now and I keep getting error messages. At least I know it's not my incompetence.

Maybe Ryanair sent someone in with wire-cutters to divert attention from things...?

The Telegraph is reporting this:

Air passengers are suffering major disruption at airports around the world after computer check-in systems crashed. Travellers have reported problems at London Gatwick, Charles de Gaulle in Paris, Reagan Airport in Washington DC, Changi in Singapore, Johannesburg and Zurich. Passengers are reporting long waits at check-in desks after the outage on Thursday morning. The cause is currently unclear.

Update: 'Things back up and running' at Gatwick
Gatwick Airport has just got back in touch.

"Things are back up and running after a momentary IT glitch," a spokesman said.

It is not clear if the issue has been fixed at all airports

Gatwick Airport: Check-in software affecting multiple airlines
A Gatwick Airport spokesman said: "This is an airline issue, not an airport issue. This isn't Gatwick software, it's hit a few airlines' check-in systems which are down.

"They are using Altea software and there are several airlines that use the same software for check-in and it's that which is affected.

"They cannot check the passengers in."

The spokesman could not confirm which airlines are affected.

I have just called the gold line to do a last minute change as I got to VIE Airport early enough to catch the flight before the one I'm booked on. The agent told me that the system is entirely down. I've just had to stand and watch a flight board and not be allowed on it.

Annoyed muchly but I guess I'll get over it!
