Thanks for the replies.

I've got the screenshot from the app of the recipients and have entered everything correctly, including email address. Frustrating. Trying to call now.

There have been problems with ba.com this morning so it could possibly be related to that.

The reason is that there are no Avios on the recipients account, as it's brand new.

This isn't in the T&C of the offer, but apparently is an Avios condition.

It would have been helpful to include that in the message you received instead of leading you down the garden path.
