Need some help to understand the charge
Hi FT friends:
Just used BA Avios to book 3 Aer Lingus RT coaches from ORD to DUB through phone. The charge was 62400 points + $568.47 cash. And the cash breaks down into $210 + $358.47 tax/fee/charge. I was confused because I thought the points charge should be 78000. And the charge was also different from what Avios.com which shows more than $600. But the agent confirmed that is correct. I have 1 child (<6 Years) come with us. So did the agent mistakenly use Avios+Money to book my tickets or the $210 is the carrier surcharge? Thanks a lot! gogomustangs |
What does MMB show? Is this listing that you will earn TPs and avios? If you look at the flight what fare code is being shown?

Just a guess but, as the number of Avios is exactly 20% less than you expected, is this possibly the rate for an "off peak" redemption? For flights originating from the UK, the discount is approx 15% off a peak redemption.

It may help us a bit if you made it clear which is what. Is this 2 adults and 1 child over 2 years (which I suspect), or 3 adults plus the child? Overall it's easier to look at a per passenger cost rather than aggregating.
As a general point though, Avios.com charges different fees to BAEC on Aer Lingus bookings, and it seems that BAEC uses a lower off peak rate than Avios - this has been reported before. In round terms, based on sterling value, Avios charges £200 return, and BAEC £150, per person. And so your dollar component about seems fairly close to that. Avios does have a peak and off peak level for Aer Lingus, but it appears to be higher at both points compared to BAEC.
