Lounge dining etiquette question

I appreciate that many of you have important questions to address around Avios, tier points, MF strikes and what-not. Either that or you may have real work to be getting on with.

However, can someone please let me know which of the two scones in the picture below has been correctly prepared and is therefore ready-to-eat?

More importantly, what should I do with the incorrectly prepared scone? I'm too short and rotund to reach the top of the horse.

Well ... there are Devonian and Cornish perspectives on this, I have been told.

However, the consensus seems to be Jam first, then Cream. The principle being that Cream first would make it more challenging to spread the Jam. (Although you did that rather well )

Of course, I could be completely wrong ... I'm from Surrey originally.

It is a Devon / Cornwall thing.

Devon is cream under Jam. Cornwall is Jam under cream.

You are in neither Devon nor Cornwall so both are correct. Eat both.



But how are you pronouncing scone ?

It should rhyme with gone and not stone....

Glad to hear my understanding of the cultural differences was correct.

As to pronunciation, I believe Americans pronounce them as 'biscuits'

Indeed they do.

Although strictly speaking a US biscuit doesn't usually have sugar in it.

They are often served with white savoury gravy for breakfast. It sounds and looks horrible - but once you get used to it - it is actually pretty addictive. (for me - anyway)

It depends on whether you'd prefer to be seen in public with cream or jam stuck to the end of your nose.

I try to absorb the culinary differences of the various places we visit, but sadly both the white [tasteless] gravy and the abomination called 'grits' have both failed to inspire me to repeat the experience

Biscuits & gravy make for an excellent & tasty breakfast when in the USA. I even had a "deluxe" version in Idaho Falls once, much to the disgust of my travelling companions.

Yes - 'biscuits and gravy' - neither are biscuits or gravy - scones and a savoury white sauce (disgusting IMO).
Back to scones - I'm a phillistine (or from Devon) according to those who know me, cream then jam simple because I don't like the jam sinking into the scone (which rhymes with gone !) - if you are deft enough to spread jam on cream no problem

Scone most definitely rhymes with gone.

It's jam first then cream on top!

Regarding biscuits and gravy, if the gravy is made properly and has little bits of sausage in it then it can be very good. What we would consider gravy is, remarkably, referred to as "brown gravy" over here. Grits are another thing altogether and are nasty!

Having made both scones and biscuits, there is indeed a pretty significant distinction. Beyond the sugar/no sugar issue, the type and proportion of the fat used differs quite a bit, leading to differences in both taste and texture.

If you're going the grits route, cheesy grits or shrimp and grits are the way to go. Otherwise you're encouraged to dump a large amount of butter in there, and a bit of salt.
