Liability for items damaged by Cabin Crew

Had an incident a couple of weeks ago in F where a member of crew spilled a tray of drinks over a couple of Hermès items (shoes and bag). Anyone familiar with the brand will know their items are far from cheap and their leathers are not susceptible to liquids (let alone alcohol). The CSM filled out a report and now customer relations are talking about 'maximum liability' of circa £1200. Is this really right?

Crikey that flight was eventful for all the wrong reasons !

BA6501 Jul 11, 2017 2:37 am

This would be the standard baggage(ish) liability of 1131 SDR.

Tell me about it. BA drama follows me around!

I hope you have informed your travel insurer that you were travelling with such expensive items!

Would that count as items are worn at the time? CR are just listing terms and conditions and they don't seem remotely bothered about goodwill...!

I would hope there is a limit, otherwise it could lead to situation where restrictions are placed on the type and value of items permitted in the cabin.

I'd be pleasantly surprised if BA gave you that much. I think there should be a bit of caveat emptor as well. After all, if you were wrapped in the shroud of Turin you can't expect them to cough up millions.

That is the limit for liability for baggage. I think that its going to the maximum that it is liable for is the most goodwill you can expect

If the limits for liability are too low, then would suggest not taking such items

Article 17 of the Montreal Convention , unchecked baggage includes personal items

The bag is circa £8k and one which is relatively frequently carried by other passengers too!

I'd assume a Birkin bag.

Tom - you must know as well as me how.... grimy F can be - I certainly wouldn't have an £8k bag anywhere near it. I have a Mulberry iPad case which is only worth £150 and that came off with sticky stuff on it (not mine!!)

If you choose to take items of such value , then the onus is on you to ensure coverage beyond that which the airline is liable for
