Help to check BA seat availability and BA flight loads

This is community help desk which allows members to assist each other in finding out how many seats are available on any given flight.

If you wish to request availability for a specific flight, please state the date and origin/departure airport codes, not just the flight number.

Please also restrict requests to BA/oneworld flights - flights for other airlines may be removed to avoid cluttering the thread and taking it away from BAEC.

As of 15 Oct 2014 flightstats.com no longer displays flight availability.

Fare class availability can be queried in various ways*:
* Please update wiki if you know of any others.
** Origin of data concealed and probably unauthorised (so buyer beware)

What do the codes mean?
Suppose we have a result as F1 A0 J9 C7 D0 RC IC W9 E9 T4 Y9 BC HC ...

This means:
There is 1 seat in the F bucket for sale
There are 0 seats in the A and D bucket for sale, but you can join the waitlist in case seats get released later.
There are at least 9 seats in the J, W, E and Y buckets.
The R, I, B and H buckets are closed to waitlisting.

There are two important things to note about how to interpret these numbers that many people don't understand as it is very counter intuitive:
1) There is NO direct relation to the actual number of seats available on the specific flight. They only mean that the airline is willing to sell this many seats on that specific flight. The airline may intend to oversell seats or withhold seats from sale for many reasons.

2) In the example above, the results show W9 E9 T4 (which are all WT+ buckets). This does not mean that there are 9+9+4=22 seats for sale. Interpret these numbers as "there are at least 9 seats for sale in WT+". There could really be anywhere between 9 and 22 seats for sale - we just can't tell from the numbers the system gives us. Therefore, the conservative approach of assuming that there are at least 9 seats for sale is usually the best one.

What does the "C" mean?
Closed to waitlisting.
In the example above we have RC, IC, BC and HC. This is different to A0 and D0: The A and D buckets are "full" but you can apply to join their waitlists (if your fare permits waitlisting). With R, I, B and H you cannot even request a seat.

The carrier will determine how to confirm your seat if it wishes. Sometimes this may happen immediately, other times only a few minutes before the flight's departure. The order of the waitlist is determined by the carrier privately, but your Executive Club status will push you towards the front of the queue. Many cheap fares do not allow waitlisting.

Differences for non-BA airlines
  • Some carriers (those using Sabre such as AA) only show a maximum of 7 available seats (not 9). Others only show a maximum of 5.
  • Some carriers use "L" instead of "0" (e.g., CL DL YL) to indicate you may waitlist for the seat. This tends to happen when the entire flight is on a list basis.

Award seats frequently come from buckets that are not shown outside of internal reservation systems.
Thanks!

Indeed its not exactly transparent. G2 on 23APR18 yet the Japan explorer fare (which apparently is G class) has plenty availability (>2)

Never could fathom JAL award availability!

It's a bit of a weird one. Basically JL are only selling 3 x economy buckets for this route - or rather 2, as I can't see any H Class fares loaded (may exist for CONSOL/ITX fares).

They do a discounted 30 day APEX in G, then Y, then J, but I can't see any J available all year. There is an F Class fare loaded, but I can't see any F

So what's i'd deduct is that there is another fare bucket for redemptions that are not publicly available. That's quite common - I use it for staff fares. You can't actually see the availability in a certain subclass, so have to manually request / long sell to get availability. No idea what it is though, so can't request it (ie. one Gulf Carrier offer staff fares in X Class which you can't see). You'd need someone at the airline to confirm what bucket the BA redemptions are booked into.
Thanks for this! I did call JAL in London to enquire - while she was looking, she did 'say' X (to herself) while searching but when I enquired if 'X' was the fare class for such a redemption seat she promptly told me to ignore it! Meanwhile she then went on to confuse the hell out of me - first she said it was an 'embargo' date (23APR) but when I enquired she couldn't tell me which dates were embargoed, then she told me I could only book an Avios reward flight in the two months preceding the flight date - (which most know is again nonsense) and finally told me the flights that do currently show on BA.COM as being available (e.g. 17APR18 where 5 economy/reward seats show as being available...some available in May18 also) it would actually not be possible to book them!

I love to fly JAL, but their booking/reservation anomalies are frustrating!

Hi

I sympathise with you! I lived in Japan for a few years and their booking system used to drive me crazy for cash tickets. Awards on Avios were also a bit hit and miss, often I would complete the booking, past payment page and then it would throw back an error. Calling BA they would then say it's not available, although the BA website still shows it available! Might be best to give BA a call to check actual availability!

I have some miles with JAL and had a quick look at their website to see if I any useful info.

The 2 months rule is true (at least for JAL members, I'm trying to remember if also true for Avios rewards, but think most of my bookings were international not domestic.):

"Award reservations will be accepted no earlier than 9:30 (Japan time) on the same calendar day as the flight date, two months prior to departure (*1) and no later than four days prior to the departure date (Japan time)." taken from JAL Mileage Bank - JAL Group Airlines Domestic Award Tickets : How to Request Awards

Also on the same page, it talks about restricted dates, although I must admit I cannot make sense of this:

Hope you manage to book your tickets ok!

I have booked JL domestic >2mths out previously...plus its definitely an oddity with ITM-NRT route alone (which only has 1-2 flights per day) - for example ITM/KIX(OSA)-HND is wide open each day (incl 23APR) with tonnes of award availability across the numerous flights each day.

But..it's Japan, theres no winning, one must conform and not question it (otherwise just get lucky!)

JAL award availability is not visible on expertflyer, and for domestic flights the fare buckets do not correspond to local availability nor local fares. Before they upgraded their booking systems, availability in N class could be tied to international economy award availability with I class implying business award availability but this no longer holds true. If anyone figures out a new pattern then there's a thread on the JAL forum which would be a more appropriate place to expand on this.

JL Award Booking Classes are Z/U/P/T and Z/D/P/S (for domestic flights with JP), all of which are supported in the KVS Tool and shown as FS/CS/WS/YS respectively -- please refer to the JL Section of the KVS Tool User Guide for full details.

Terrific insight - thank you!

As it shows, ITM-HND is wide open (in YS) with minimum 3-5 seats available on each flight (and corresponds with BA.COM). Am just curious as to why the ITM-NRT is skipped....

(also it blows the two months 'rule' out of the water...as I already knew from experience myself; it also suggests 23APR is not an embargoed date on the Osaka-Tokyo domestic service)
