Joint Business Agreement(?)

Just playing around with some possible bookings;

24 Jun LHR-JFK BA175 (09:40)
29 Jun JFK-LHR AA6143 (codeshare with BA178) (07:55)

Price, £11,500 in Premium Economy

24 Jun LHR-JFK BA175 (09:40)
29 Jun JFK-LHR BA178 (07:55)

Price, £6,000 in Premium Economy

(Anyway, looks like I'm flying in economy... )

W is popular on the 178 (for obvious reasons really), I frequently end up in J simply because the difference is so small from the inflated W prices. That said I see £4197 for those flights in W if you buy separate tickets...or £6501 in J...

I think the issue what that combination is the BA+AA flight numbers, I haven't seen a "normal" fare combining flight numbers out/back.

No reason why you can't. Generally the same fares are replicated across the JBA so you will see a BA/AA/IB/AY versions of the same fare. If you go on ba.com for routes to the US you are offered BA and AA flights and can combine with one out and the other back.

Yes of course you can combine the operating airlines, but I don't think ba.com ever offers you the choice of BA flight numbers and AA flight numbers?

Yes it does. Try it looking at LHR-JFK you will see listed both AA and BA flights listed. You can pick one out at the other back.

They're flights, aka metal. BA6501 is talking about numbers, hypothesising that the mix of codeshares is causing this inflated price.

Fail to see why a mixture of codeshares per se would cause it. Obviously selling class availability can differ on any specific flight depending on who the marketing carrier is.

Quite. It was my understanding that the JBA gave the same pricing for a (metal) flight combination regardless of flight numbers.

(It was just a curious observation on the pricing, I'm not sure they're going to sell many £11,000 tickets for W on this route.)

I'm not quite sure how you got to those numbers. According to ITA:-

BA175/BA178 in W class in both directions is £2,111.00 + £443.67 = £2,554.67.

BA175/AA6143 is cheapest in W class out, J class back, and is £4,937.00 + £486.67 = £5,423.67.

If you book BA175/BA178 in W class out, J class back, you do get a slightly cheaper base fare and therefore total: £4,120.50 + £486.67 = £5,146.67. But this is not nearly as big a disparity as your original post suggested.

Just for reference on google flights I get £2,554.67 in premium economy bookable direct through BA without codeshares.

It was just our corporate booking tool which, how should I put it, isn't the best...

Maybe you should have taken what was on offer. You might have been flying in F, both ways.

Generally true, although for premium economy booking classes, where BA uses W/E/T, AA currently only use W/P, and they load all the advance purchase fares to book into P class. Once that's gone only W will fare on AA, even if BA is still selling E or even T on the same flight. I think that's probably what the OP was finding.

I believe AA are adding an additional booking class to the W cabin in due course. (B?)
