I am currently BA Silver, membership year ending 8 Sep 2017 (card expiry 30 Oct 2017). In the past month I have become a proud new father.

Annoyingly, I currently have 590 TP with 1 eligible flight remaining before I could retain Silver via usual channel. My first trip upon return to work will be mid-Sep to Indonesia. My preferred choice of carriers (based on cost to company, flight times and my FFPs) would be either CX or SQ.

Assuming I wanted to maximise my BA Silver membership, I wonder what would be my best option?

1) Claim the paternity benefit now - thus extending my card expiry to 30 Oct 2018? What happens to my Silver membership year, or any TPs/qualifying flights that I would collect in mid-Sep 2017 if I were to fly CX?

2) Ask BA to extend my redemption year deadline by 14 days, fly CX (I could potentially force a routing that includes 1 BA leg to satisfy the 4 flights requirement), so my Silver gets renewed to 30 Oct 2018 via usual channel - and THEN I claim paternity benefit to extend it to 30 Oct 2019?

Any thoughts? Have I missed any other options? (given I'm dealing with a newborn and an exhausted mum, consider a TP run out of the question )

Thanks!
Congrats! That is a rather annoying situation.

I can see why you wouldn't want to consider a TP run, however this may be the best option to take advantage of all those TPs you have saved up over the year however, a rather painless back to back would gain you those 10 TPs needed to keep Silver until 2019. I would try and convince the other half the time out is worth it for your vacations for the next couple of years.

If you went with the paternity benefit now, the TPs in Sept will count towards next year. You'll able to keep earning them. Regardless of flying you'll have Silver until Oct 2018.

If you go with the extension those TPs in Sept will count towards this years membership if within 2 weeks but you'll apply for the paternity benefit after and get Silver until 2019. Unless your looking for Gold, this could be the best option without doing a TP run.

Anyway, good luck with your decisions.

Thanks lavajava this is really helpful. I think the most practical option would be for me to work remotely during a weekday whilst doing a back-to-back to somewhere like EDI. Shall consult the relevant thread now

What happens if you have already (re-)qualified for status in the BAEC membership year in which you take paternity/maternity?

Hi alexwuk
If you take a look at my posts in this thread, I had exactly this situation where I had already retained status half way through the year. After writing to BAEC they confirmed, if I did not retain Gold by Sept 2018, I would be extended until Sept 2019.
Cheers!

If you received the status extension from the 27-May drama *and* had a newborn, I suppose they won't grant the 1 year extension on top of the 2 year?

That would be my guess...however, I would say if this is the case there is no harm in trying. Both are unrelated and asking the question may get a fruitful response.

Our son will be one year old in a few weeks time. Both my wife and I applied for gold status extension in mid-May and by mid-June, both had emails back from BA confirming extension. I did however notice that the card expiry date has not changed.
I signed up the little one for the household acct and called BA to get the 1000 Avios bonus for him- they could see my account was on the 'discretionary spreadsheet' so I presume all is well. It's somewhat academic though as we only fly for leisure and this year, with my wife being on maternity leave and not being restricted by work leave, we have flown massively more (not less!)

As expected, I was not granted the extension as my current status has already been extended due to the 27May fiasco.

Correction: My partner's status was NOT extended either. He earned Silver this year and so his card was set to expire July 2019 originally. BAEC said that they would not extend an additional year.

I suspect this benefit is only for people who are set to lose status within 1 year or less?

Not sure about CCR - you should write in, then wait a month for the reply.
Was there any joy with retaining the CCR card?

Msm2000uk0.5 arrives in January, and I wont meet the 5000 TP threshold - but obviously don't want to lose my CCR card.

Also - assuming that even if GGL is extended, CCR cards are not provided even if 5K TP were earned during the pre-extension year?

So having spoken to the GGL line, they have said to me that they will only confirm me as Gold, because GGL is not a separate level.

They said things are considered on a case-by-case basis, but there is no flexibility in the retainership of GGL.

I will send an email shortly, to the 'baby' team at BA, and see what they say.

To say I'm irritated however, is an understatement!

Purely for info, I extended my gold a week or two back. It runs out in November and I have had 0 flights for over a year, baby is now 9 months, no problem. Extended another year and 1,000 in the household account. Bonza.

Emailed BA Baby a few months back, and was confirmed extension of Gold for one year by email. Missed 1500 TPs by a slim margin (for various reasons: trips not taken and a few trips on other alliances); just seen in my app my card expiry extended to 2018 as promised which is great news and keeps more business with BA this next year.

No sign of the 1,000 Avios but not a big deal given unspent balance c. half a million...

Any joy with the baby team on this?
