Club Europe Catering Guide 2017.

This thread outlines the new arrangements for Club Europe catering, introduced on Sunday 26 March 2017 and due to end on Tuesday 11 September 2018, based on 3 zones. A new Club Europe catering product is due to be launch on Wednesday 12 September 2018, and this is based on 4 bands. The main information piece - in terms of timings and the distance zones for the meals can be found in post 1. The following cross references the photos below against the matrix of options. In addition to the photos, some FTers have written extensively on their experiences so there is more to this thread than the pictures. Also note that there was an increase in food offered on some combinations shortly after the start-up, so the more recent photos may be the best place to start. The previous shorthaul catering guide, now locked but which had the previous 4 band system, is to be found here.

Numbers relate to the post number. Vegetarian means the alternative option provided as standard rather than the pre-ordered versions - which are VLML (Lacto-ovo), AVML (Asia) and VGML (Vegan) . There are differences between the offering in/out of LHR, LGW, LCY+STN. Last update: 833

Note posts before 1-832 are typically the April 2017 menu. 833 and above is from the menu for May 2017.

Last night's 21:55 LGW-EDI was a choice between a croque monsieur or a chicken 'salad'. I was in 1F and they had run out of the hot sandwich by then (5 in cabin, 1A-C, 1F and 2D-F) so it sounds like they're expecting the salad to be more popular (I wanted the salad so was happy). There was also a salted caramel mousse.

Overall, it was very tasty but portion size really is a joke.

Not sure if a change in standards but service started off with drinks & nuts followed by the meal.

All service was hand-run from the galley with three or four offers of a refill / anything else and more bread offered etc, so a good crew.

Hopefull they are also receiving plenty of negative feedback about serving a hot sandwich as a meal in a premium cabin too, and will also consider changing that too.
I'm really annoyed that the lunch / dinner flights I've got coming up to Italy have gone from a meal to a sandwich / appetiser salad

Fingers crossed! I think its a mad option to give kids as although I personally would have loved it I wasn't the norm at all! A sandwich and crisps would be much better and probably cheaper!

The single butterflied prawn is a special touch indeed, and the chicken slices were only 1mm thick in places. It was tasty enough, you would just need at least 2 of these plates for me to consider it a main course, and a proper hot option is not too much to ask on a flight of this length. Poor is the only way to describe this offering, I doubt the food on the tray cost much more than a pound. The comparison to before is stark.

Those choosing the carb-fest only received half a tomato & mozzarella panini. Not sure if they were meant to get 2 halves or further enhancing has already begun. I should have asked for that as well, since it turned out that they hadn't loaded any bread to grace the new bread plate (the crew tried to say there shouldn't be any until they saw the butter on the tray...).

The CSM seemed genuinely embarrassed and came to speak with a couple of us to apologise for the lack of food. He said he would be feeding it back and went to the trouble of taking our contact details. He said he could have thrown a few Avios at us (nobody had mentioned compensation), but then nothing would be fed back. I smiled and said any Avios he gave would more likely be better than anything the feedback would generate, but let it slide since I am interested to see if anyone actually contacts me.

The drinks from large bottles were done well enough, at least in quantity if not particularly in quality. A drinks run with nuts prior to the amuse bouche tray, and a couple of top up offers, though the cabin was very lightly loaded (8 pax in 8 rows of CE), as was ET on that flight. I won't blame the crew for being a bit unsure about what we should and should not be getting, as it is new to them (I only knew myself because of this thread), and they were very good overall.

This is a poor show from BA. I've had some genuinely enjoyable hot mains on evening flights from locations like MAD and PMI in the last year or two, this is a significant downgrade. Yes, there appear to be some actual improvements on the "long" flights (though I suspect only improvement relative to recent provision), and obviously on domestics since there was no CE previously, but BA didn't have to create losers here, it chose to do that.
To circle round on this, the CSM's feedback did generate a call to me from customer relations, to apologise for the offerings. She seemed quite surprised that half a panini or an amuse bouche salad is all you get in CE on a flight with 2h35 block time. She did make a point about wastage, but agreed that they may have gone too far. Of course all she could do is feed that back (hopefully in a larger portion than I received onboard) to the catering team.

The complaint about the meal itself would only have been enough for an apology, though she deemed the additional failure to load bread enough to tip this into Avios compensation territory (I wonder if this would be the case if I were not GGL). I wasn't going to refuse, but did make the point that my main concerns were feeding back regarding the ludicrous new portion size for "medium" lunch/dinner and the unacceptable (to me) replacement of a proper hot dish with a panini (whole or half).

Although not hopeful in the current BA climate, perhaps if there is enough negative feedback there will be change. At the very least on medium routes, replacing the panini with a proper hot dish, and increasing the size of the salad option to make it a reasonable portion, would make the offering more sensible. I personally think 2h30-2h35 block time flights deserve more, but I'm guessing that is too much to hope for.

If it stays like this, I'll be avoiding CE medium flights at those times of day. An exit row in ET will do fine. I know it's not the only reason to fly CE, but I'm making my own small protest regardless of how inconsequential it may be to BA. To paraphrase Somerset Maugham, it seems to eat well on a BA CE medium route, one must eat breakfast three times a day...if you like a BA breakfast, of course

I was fortunate to be flying between MAN and LHR yesterday (1 April), the day BA introduced its Club Europe service to domestic flights. If I remember correctly, LHR-MAN is BA's shortest sector with flight times of just over 30 minutes - on the return it is not unusual to have a flight time even shorter than 30 minutes.

MAN flights fall under the new 'Short' band, and along with LBA and JER it is further subclassified as an 'express' sector (that is a flight with a service time of under 22 minutes). I'm a regular on this route, the vast majority of my trips begin and end at MAN, and I was a little apprehensive about what we should expect on this route and how the heck they would actually provide a Club Europe service in the time available.

BA1389 09:40 Manchester - London Heathrow (Brunch)
My mid-morning flight was to be a 'brunch' service. When checking-in I noticed that there were 12 rows of CE on this A320 flight, with just 3 empty seats near the rear of the 'cabin'. I was in 1A and had a great view of what was going on in the galley. We had a 15 minute ground delay (due to a busy LHR) which afforded the CSM time to brief the other crew member on how they would run the service. They also took the time to remove the plastic covers from the meals.

The CSM counted the meals, there were 24 cold plates, and 16 hot sandwiches. The CSM was a little taken aback - "how many passengers are there?" she asked her colleague. "43" was the reply. The flight appeared under catered.

Service
Those of you who have flown on MAN flights will know that within seconds of takeoff the crew are usually on their feet getting the carts ready for service. Unusually we were at 3000+ ft before the crew were on their feet, and then it was a good few minutes before they started the service.

Hot towels were offered on the ground. There were (eventually) 3 cabin crew working the CE cabin. One of the cabin crew brought out one of each meal option and asked our choice. The choices were as follows (I've borrowed these photographs from Flight Detective's post: http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28089528-post180.html):

Option 1: Hot sandwich - (a ciabatta with mozzarella and tomato) although on this MAN-LHR flight it was served with a dessert pot.

Option 2: Selection of continental cold meats and cheese - this option did not have the dessert pot.

After about 3 or 4 minutes of service, a third cabin crew member appeared. It was decided that instead of carrying the plates to the passengers they would now serve from the trolley. Two crew served the meals whilst the third began the drinks service. The drinks service was very slow to start, 1C had completely finished his sandwich and dessert by the time he was offered a drink. I on the other hand waited for my drink to arrive before 'digging in'. The passenger in 2F asked to have both meal options but he was politely refused.

Food
The sandwich (ciabatta) is rather substantial, especially as a mid-morning snack.Even so, the sandwich was popular and not one of the 16 passengers who chose the sandwich left any of it on their plates when the service items were collected prior to landing. The chap sat in 1C wolfed his down and clearly enjoyed it judging by the comments he made to the crew. The ciabatta was served whole, personally I'd prefer it to be served cut in half - careful what you wish for!

I decided to go for the selection of continental cold meats and cheese, I found it tasty and really rather nice. It was just the right amount for this very short flight. As this was my first ever CE service on a domestic flight, I had to have the champagne and this paired very well with the dish.

The bread basket was offered to all passengers. No drink refills were offered, but to test the service I asked the CSM for a diet coke whilst the main service was still ongoing toward the rear of the cabin. The CSM asked the crew member to serve me when they were taking the drinks trolley back to the galley (so a wait of a couple of minutes or so).

On this flight the crew struggled a little, they certainly earned their money. There was simply insufficient crew to serve the 43 passengers on such a short sector. Had we not had to do the usual holding patterns waiting to join Heathrow approach (the flight time was 46 minutes), I am not convinced they would have completed the service. Whilst those of us in the front were served relatively quickly, those at the back would have had a long wait - those at the front had mostly finished their refreshments before those at the back had received their food. I don't think I would have been happy sat down there. This is day one of the new 'express' CE service and the crew were certainly unfamiliar with the SOP. Once they get a few sectors under their belts I'm sure it will be as quick and efficient as it used to be on this sector. This notwithstanding, a very enjoyable flight.

BA1402 18:10 London Heathrow - Manchester (Dinner)
This is an early evening flight that falls within the 'Dinner' band. We drew the big straw on this sector as the aircraft was a mid-haul A321. There were 20 of the 23 seats occupied in the CE cabin. Actual flight time was just 30 minutes.

Service
Service on this flight was much swifter than the outbound, although no hot towels were offered. There were two crew members servicing the CE cabin and they were on their feet within 60 seconds of takeoff. The meals and drinks were served together seat-side from the trolley, and what a difference this made to the overall enjoyment of the service. With 23 fewer passengers than the morning sector, and only one less cabin crew member, the service was quicker and more relaxed than the morning. Both crews were very friendly and smiling, but the evening crew were certainly more relaxed.

Food
The choices were as follows (and again I've borrowed these photographs from Flight Detective's post:http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/28089560-post207.html):

Option 1: Hot sandwich - (a ciabatta with pulled braised beef cheek, cheese and jalapeno peppers) and a dessert pot.

Option 2: Fresh salad - and a dessert pot.

As I had not eaten anything since noon, I wanted something a little more substantial and so I opted to try the sandwich. On the brunch service the sandwich was already plated in the galley, this time it was plated from the trolley by the seat. I was pleased to see the sandwich this time was actually cut in half, I was not so pleased to only be served one half! This was a 'dinner' service (albeit on a short 'express' sector) so I would have expected to have received the whole sandwich just as in the mid-morning brunch service. I don't know what the SOP is for this, but hopefully it will become clearer in the coming days and weeks.

The sandwich itself was actually rather tasty, I am not really a sandwich lover but I did enjoy this. I would have enjoyed a whole sandwich more! I ordered champagne which again paired nicely with the sandwich. I know it is fashionable here to criticise the Castelnau but, when chilled properly at altitude, I find it really isn't too bad at all. I much prefer this to the Pommery and (especially) the Monopole that were previously served in CE. The dessert pot was nice and refreshing.

My wife elected to have the 'fresh salad'. She really enjoyed it, again paired with the Castelnau. It's a quasi mezze plate, that was light and refreshing.

The bread basket was offered to all customers and drink refills were offered to me and The Lady Tobias as the trolley returned to the galley.

Overall Impression
This truly is a great enhancement to the Manchester flights. It is a huge improvement to that we had become accustomed. My wife and I thoroughly enjoyed our first experiences of CE on this route. Yes, there were some issues in service but I suspect this will settle down once crews become familiar with the new routine. The MAN sector has always been a challenge for the cabin crew, and I don't see that changing anytime soon - especially if Club goes all the way back.

I cannot reconcile my experience yesterday to the complaints I've read in this topic about the sandwiches being disgusting or vile, the fact of the matter is the sandwiches were very popular on the two flights I took and I did not notice any half-eaten sandwiches being returned to the galley. Both cold options were just the right portion size and were really quite enjoyable, We see a true enhancement here and one that was much needed. The new service was very well received by those who commented on board.

I have not yet flown any other Club Europe flights since the changes were introduced. Whilst the portions we were served on the two sectors flown to/from MAN might have been just right for those flights, or even for any old band one flight, I know that I would not be so impressed if that same offering was served to me on a 'Medium' band flight - especially so on lunch and dinner flights. I think BA needs to rethink its Medium band service.

When I was told a while back of the changes to the CE service, those telling me were very excited about what they thought was coming. They were excited to be able to offer something they were not embarrassed to serve. Whilst there is certainly improvement to the Long and Short (especially domestic) bands, there is clearly a reduction in the offerings on Medium band flights. I would encourage everyone to feed back to BA after every Medium band flight to complain about the inadequacy of the revised food offering.

As far as MAN is concerned - well done BA, it's about bloody time!

Thanks for this. I'm surprised about crew levels. I'm sure on the short routes they trigger additional crew. I've been on Jersey flights with 5 cabin crew on the 319 (minimum crew is 3) and that's 3 for CE 2 for ET. Anyway, I'm sure they'll work it out!

Nice report Tobias! Were there 4 or 5 crew on the A320? If there were only 4, and 3 in CE, I guess there wasn't much service in Y! And surely if BA need to start carrying an extra crew member, that'll only raise costs, which is completely contrary to all the "progress".

I know that LH on their short short routes (FRA-MUC/DUS) really slim down their Y catering. Going MUC-FRA we were given a choclate bar at the door, and then there was a very quick drinks service. On FRA-DUS I was in J. No chocolate at the door, and no service at all in Y. J got a farily decent light meal on the 30 min flight. Perhaps on some services like CE heavy MAN they will simply not bother trying to do the BoB service, and just put all the crew on CE service.

I don't know, I'm afraid. Naughty of me really not to have noted that because it is certainly relevant. There were 149 pax on board in total. On the inbound A321 the captain mentioned 5 crew, but there was no mention of crew numbers on the outbound A320.

Thanks Tobias-UK!

Excellent to have a detailed first day summary of this route.

The catering looks largely appropriate for the time of day and flight length. As with other short CE routes with large numbers of passengers, sitting at the back of the cabin may lead to limited time to enjoy the catering.

I hope that BA will consider passenger and cabin crew feedback regarding all aspects of the service and fine tune where necessary.

I fully agree with your assessment of the current and previous CE champagnes.

I completely agree with your assessment. The food offering you experienced on the 1h block time LHR-MAN is in fact the exact same as that offered on a 2h+ LHR-MAD, NCE, or PRG. I think it is a great concept for a short domestic route and a big improvement, but also an inadequate offering for the latter and a very significant deterioration.

My sense is that the new binary divide created by BA -- in effect, an invisible border separate a hot sandwich or tiny amuse bouche 'below' or a full four course meal 'above' is too crude and not very logical, especially when flights of roughly the same length find themselves on the two sides of that invisible dividing line.

I would consider that 'short' and 'long' make general sense (although the new offering is meagre for lunch/dinner time even for some longer 'short' routes) but 'medium' should, well, be something in between rather than short with glorified drinks. My personal sense is that an all-day offering of the former lunch formula (choice of a main course salad or a hot dish, accompanied by bread and a dessert pot) would be a more acceptable fit for flights with 1.45-2.30 block time (ie roughly the medium band).

Veg breakfast on the BA1477 from GLA this morning. Tasty enough but no different to the old Y offering.
