Hi all,

Well, maybe I wasn't very clear.

Maybe a better way would be to say I paid Ł125 more to "save" 16,250 avios.

By "paid" I meant this:

I searched for a one-way last-minute redemption PHX-LHR in economy (was all that was available) and was offered this:

How many Avios do you want to use for your flight?
25000 Avios + Ł 122.50
20000 Avios + Ł 167.50
16250 Avios + Ł 192.50
12500 Avios + Ł 217.50
10000 Avios + Ł 237.50
8750 Avios + Ł 247.50

The first option is the standard avios price plus fees.

I have sufficient avios to pay for that. But then I did a calculation!

Ł247.50 - Ł122.50 = Ł125.

25,000 - 8,750 = 16,250

So, I would pay Ł125 to "buy" 16,250 avios.

In other words, after the basic transaction, my bank account would be Ł122.50 lower and my BAEC account 25,000 avios lower.

In the later transaction, I would be Ł125 more poorer, but I would have a BAEC account with 16,250 more avios in it than in option 1.

That's why I used the quote-marks "paid".

Maybe a better way would be to say those extra avios cost me 0.77p each.

ps. Cheapest economy fare PHX or DEN to LON was coming in at Ł1,400!

So those 8,750 avios saved me about Ł400 - making them "worth" about 4.5p each.

(the return, for anyone's info, was with AA miles in business - so I have adjusted the outbound to reflect it is not worth half the return price)

I've often effectively bought Avios at well under 1p each using this method, the figure of 0.73p seems entirely believable to me.
Yes, I was very mindful of this being a redemption, but I'm clearly not expressing myself too well here.

If you deploy Avios, you hopefully want to maximise the value you can get. Let's start with the 2p per Avios as a benchmark. Each time you use Avios you can check whether you are getting 2p or not by comparing with the alternatives (e.g. cash, another airline). If you are getting 2p value, then paying (e.g.) 1p per Avios through the offer at the top of this thread makes sense: pay 1p, get 2p value.

Now go to flygod's situation: if s/he is reducing the Avios amount to - at the marginal level - selling your Avios for 0.73p instead of 2p, then that's crazy: you can buy Avios for 1p cash outright AND you water down the value of the Avios deal you are about to make away from the 2p benchmark. Moreover on an Iberia fare you can buy at 1p and sell at 1.667p, still a good deal, though still watering down the 2p benchmark.

The only way this makes sense is if you are getting your Avios for free (or at least 0.7p or less) AND you have no way of making the 2p benchmark.

Yes, indeed I read it differently in your earlier post. This is a good deal, you can tell by making each Avios worth 1p each, and so your top line is 250+122 = Ł372. Your bottom line is 87+247 = Ł334. So this is an example mentioned in my earlier post of "Finally some BA part pay rates are neutral, so near the 1p mark, in which case it may be worth paying more cash tactically, if you can get more 2p value elsewhere or can combine with a 2-4-1." It's about 1.3p value per Avios at the marginal rate, which isn't bad.

Cheapest way to 'buy' at the moment is converting TopCashback money - you are paying 0.8p per point.

Actually you can select 3 of each item, meaning 234 000 avios for 2814€.
But as you can only credit 100000 "purchased avios" per account per year, it means one should credit it to 3 different account.

For those who also can credit to IB, you can start again and purchase 234000 "IB avios".
But in the end, that's quite a lot !
