Is there any way to work out how much the cash component for an UuA of the inbound leg of a LHR-JFK flight (WTP to CW) would be?

I tried comparing the taxes looking at WTP one-way versus CW oneway - where the difference would have been some $350 which seem a bit hefty. Comparing a WTP return with a CW return, however, the price different dropped down significantly...

Is it a straight LHR-JFK-LHR?

Yep; (looking to) book directly on ba.com.

Use matrix.itasoftware.com to look up the taxes and carrier surcharges for the journey you want to book and the journey after the upgrade (if you don't know how to do this just say and we can explain it in more detail, I won't go into it all now ini case you are already familiar).

The two things that are most relevant for a UUA are the UK APD tax for departures from the UK (not relevant for an upgrade from an already premium cabin, or an inbound upgrade), and the BA Carrier Surcharge, called YQ.

So LHR-JFK-LHR, WTP both ways:
Code:
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) Ł41.47
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) Ł3.20
US Immigration Fee (XY) Ł5.60
US Customs Fee (YC) Ł4.40
BA YQ surcharge (YQ) Ł203.00
United Kingdom Air Passenger Duty Apd (GB) Ł146.00
US International Arrival Tax (US) Ł14.50
US International Departure Tax (US) Ł14.50
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) Ł4.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) Ł3.60
For LHR-JFK-LHR with the outbound in WTP and the return in CW:
Code:
United Kingdom Passenger Service Charge Departures (UB) Ł41.47
USDA APHIS Fee (XA) Ł3.20
US Immigration Fee (XY) Ł5.60
US Customs Fee (YC) Ł4.40
BA YQ surcharge (YQ) Ł246.00
United Kingdom Air Passenger Duty Apd (GB) Ł146.00
US International Arrival Tax (US) Ł14.50
US International Departure Tax (US) Ł14.50
US September 11th Security Fee (AY) Ł4.50
US Passenger Facility Charge (XF) Ł3.60
Therefore you will pay YQ of Ł203 for the initial ticket, then an extra Ł43 when the inbound is upgraded to CW. If you have not booked yet, and the standard reward availability is there, then you can phone BA and book this all in one go and just pay the higher YQ from the outset.

The $350 figures noted in this thread are relevant to USA points of origin.

Thanks very much; that is incredibly helpful! I am still a bit of an ITA Matrix amateur, I'm afraid...

For future reference then, this is an easy one as it was a straight out and back.

In the advance routing codes, to work out the taxes for a WTP flight use:

BA /F BC=W

in both the outbound and return boxes. This forces it to choose a WTP fare.

To work out the return in CW, just change the W to a J for the return advanced routing code.

This will show an itinerary cost using the highest fare classes, which isn't relevant to working out the difference in YQ, you just need to make sure it is in the right cabin.

Select your flights and the taxes breakdown will be shown on the next page.

Great - I got that far, but didn't know how to force separate booking classes for the individual flights!

The advanced routing codes box underneath the departure airport is for the outbound flights, the one underneath the destination box is for the return journey.
