Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~£235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

I am 330 TP points way from reaching the holy land which is BA Gold in my membership by my calculations. Any suggestions for someone who is UK based to do a TP run, flexible on dates and don't really mind where I end up going ? I have seen the TLL deals but I cant get them to price right for me ?

Cheers for any tips......

This is why I am asking whether someone has any experience in upgrading an AA operated sector of a 125 paper ticket itinerary.

As far as I understand my only chance would be if they do cash upgrades at the airport on the day of departure...is this correct?

Hi,

Have a couple of questions please. I'm looking at AMS-HKG-KHH in J which can be booked on CX website for 1848eur pretty much anytime in Dec.

1) Is this a good price?

2) At the bottom during booking it says MPC points earned are 210 and miles are 15432. Do I ignore these and enter BAEC number somewhere and get 360 TP instead?

3) AMS-HKG leaves at 1245. There are two LHR-AMS flights before that arriving at 0905 and 1045. Is it safe to get the one arriving at 0905 and fall back on the latter one if things go south?

Thanks!

1) I think it's quite a good price for OneWorld. Although since HKG-KHH is only 4.5k Avios, you might want to do LHR-HKG (usually routed via BKK or PEK) on BA for around £1.8k and book a separate redemption. You'll get more Avios on BA if you have status as well

2)The calculation on the CX website is for MPC only. 360 TPs calculation is correct.

3) The 0905 should be fine, unless there is fog and there are rolling delays. If you want to be sure then fly to AMS the day/night before.

Yes, on this point AMS-BKK routed as say AMS-LHR-KUL-BKK-HKG-LHR-AMS with a stopover in HKG would be ~£1350 in J and more TPs. No need to stop in BKK (see min stay below, you can just pass through BKK on a same day connection), and obviously whilst you are on your stopover in HKG you can do your trip to KHH booked with avios.

TRAVEL FROM LAST INTERNATIONAL STOPOVER MUST COMMENCE NO EARLIER THAN THE FIRST SUN AFTER DEPARTURE OF THE FIRST INTERNATIONAL SECTOR.

Yes, I completely forgot that ex-AMS fare. The positioning flight can be done the day before as B2B, which should minimise risk (as long as the connection time between AMS-LHR and LHR-KUL is less than 24hrs)

HKG-KHH can also be booked by cash in economy, as it is quite a short hop.

My wife wouldn't be happy if I propose this routing though.

Haha thanks KARFA and nkvuong for great suggestions. I would prefer to have a brief layover in HKG on the way back (ie KHH-HKG am, then pm back to EU) so routing via PEK is not feasible.

My initial plan is actually this: wife and child go from LHR to KHH early dec. I meed them out there mid Dec. Then all back together (via HKG) late dec.

Routing via BKK would probably be a struggle...especially only for a 140 TP gain (I think).

Is CX J better than BA J? Going out in summer on BA so would be nice to try CX as well.

I know its safer to have a night in AMS first, but is it a big risk to go first thing in the morning if there is a spare backup flight to switch to? I don't think my wife is comfortable travelling out for a night with our son by herself and it seems a waste for me to escort them to AMS just for a night.

The KHH-HKG leg ideally needs to be in business (lots and lots of luggage). How does one redeem these with Avios? If I go to the BA site, the route doesn't come up. Do I do this on CX.com?

Thanks!

Thanks to Beaulieu for noting this in post #768, it seems the MAN-SAT AA fare has been refilled so details below. Also covers MAN to OKC, LIT, and BOS.

AA ILN7B4T1 MAN to SAT/OKC/BOS - ~£1,049 in J

Doesn't seem to work for other UK non-LON AA departure points.

As noted previously by rossmacd - can be routed MAN-HEL-JFK-BOS and return. MAN-HEL would give 80 TPs, so 520 TPs in total. You could get 600 TP max if you went via HEL both out and back and did two transfers in the US, so something like MAN-HEL-JFK-DCA-BOS rtn.

Example prices:
OKC - £1,049
SAT - £1,049

Routings such as MAN-BOS-DFW-SAT or MAN-JFK-PHX-SAT should be possible. You can also route MAN-HEL and then on to JFK or ORD. MAN-HEL is 80 TPs. If you route via HEL you can't do a >2000 mile route in the US though due to maximum permitted mileage, so something like MAN-HEL-JFK-PHX-SAT wouldn't work.

As noted previously by rossmacd - can be routed MAN-HEL-JFK-BOS and return. So 520 TPs in total. You could get 600 TP max if you went via HEL both out and back and did two transfers in the US, so something like MAN-HEL-JFK-DCA-BOS rtn.

680 is possible with MAN-HEL-xxx-JFK-DFW-SAT, where xxx is somewhere in Europe, and you can swap the DFW for basically anywhere short. The best TP/£ is via HEL but then direct to JFK or ORD, at about £911 for 600TP. Here is an example of how to search for this (pinched from Beaulieu's post!):

I think seat-wise, CX J (1-2-1 reverse herringbone) is better than BA J (2-4-2 or 2-3-2 A380 UD). BA allows more checked-in luggage (2x32kg, 3x32kg if you are Gold), CX only allows 40kg in J and 60kg for Gold. With BA, you get bonus Avios for status and can UuA to First as well.

The ex-LHR routing can be LHR-PEK/BKK-HKG-LHR, so you can do KHH-HKG-LHR on the way back.
Same for the ex-AMS fare, you can route AMS-LHR-BKK-HKG-LHR-AMS as well

If you search for Avios redemption for KHH-HKG (normal flight search wouldn't come up), there are seats pretty much on every flight. Dragonair KHH-HKG sometimes has First (CX J seats, but better service), but it's a fairly short flight.

If you get hit by fog, rolling delays or flights cancellation might throw your backup plan out of the window. I was stuck on the tarmac for 4 hours once due to fog, luckily it was a B2B so no issue.
