** AA Domestic First on two cabin will earn business TPs and avios for departures on or after 11 January 2017 - see reference posts for more details **

** Note that the practice of AA Domestic 3-class service flights booking into A for 210 TPs when I was no longer available ceased in September 2017. Discussion here. **

Please read the first few posts in this thread first as it contains lots of information which may answer your question.

Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?
Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. The guide to using ITA matrix in post #4 (see here) along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or fewer
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under Ł300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under Ł500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for Ł520. Also the BA fare for LHR-HEL-TLL at ~Ł235 is still available and would get 200 TPs for a return.

Playing around with the BA flight calculator and notest this:-

https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6n...ew?usp=sharing

It will show you LHR to MEL! Is this a hint that QF10 Via Perth next year will have an BA code on it?

Unlikely, alas. More likely a hold over from the old days when BA and QF did have a joint venture.

I've been lurking on the site and trying to get to grips with ITA, but have yet to make an actual TP run.

I have an upcoming work trip to YYC Sep 22-Oct 6 and I'd like to maximise TPs as it's the start of my BAEC year in September.

I've done a few ex DUB trips to YYC mainly to get CW at a sensible price, but I'd like to try something a but more adventurous. I can take a couple of days to get there and the same to get back and wondered if anyone has any creative ideas to get maximum TP.

The best I can find is DUB-CLT-DFW-YYC-LHR-DUB which gives 140+40+40+140+40 which is about the same as price as BA direct LHR-YYC. However, it's a little more expensive than DUB-LHR-YYC-LHR-DUB which has only 40 less TP, so the long trip doesn't really seem worth the hassle.

Any suggestions greatly appreciated.

In the Continental US you need to try and get legs over 2000 miles. So You'd be looking for DUB-JFK-PHX-YVR, for example (I have no idea if PHX-YYC is possible on a direct, just giving an example). Or JFK-LAX-YYC.

Also, cash fares between YYC and YVR are generally reasonable, so see if you can get a better routing into YVR for the same price and stump up the cash add on yourself.

Failing that, book a TP run within the US whilst you're there?

Whilst correct in concept, the only AA flight into YYC is from DFW, making it a waste for TP run purposes.

YVR does have the PHX and LAX options, although most ex-EU or ex-UK fares will try to send you through DFW and will not price a LHR-JFK-PHX/LAX-YVR as cheaply.

Oldnick is probably better off with the more direct route, then booking a separate TP run.

Thanks for the info. I'll certainly look at going via the west coast to YVR and onwards.

Hi all.

I need 275 tier points before Nov 8th.

I am based in London, and am willing to book one or two EU weekend breaks... also, next August I am going to Tokyo for my honeymoon, so could try and book our flights by Nov 8th (possible?)

I currently have 130k avios points, and two companion vouchers also.

Anyway, I am new to this, so suggestions on the most TP bang for my buck would be appreciated.

Needing 275 you really need to go on two SH+ returns, getting 160 each in business. Look at the first post for destinations earning this. Doesn't matter when you book, for TPs the date you fly is the date you earn them.

ah, ok. I will look into October weekend breaks then. Does upgrading with avios reduce the TP totals?

Also, if I use a companion voucher, does my wife's ticket then have zero tier points?

Thanks

I think you are getting a few things confused here.

Companion vouchers are for reward bookings only. Reward bookings do not earn any TP or avios. So I would set that voucher aside here.

You can use avios to upgrade cabins for a cash booking (UuA) but you will earn TP and avios afor the original cash paid cabin, and not for the cabin you upgrade in to.

Avios and TP are earned by the person actually doing the flight. Whilst avios can be transferred between people, TP can't. If you and your wife are on a cash booking together she would earn TP as would you.

Worth nothing too that the 'earn at paid cabin' principle also applies for reward bookings in Economy which you upgrade by paying cash - so you'd earn nothing for those.

On the other hand, paid bookings upgraded with cash - either through a POUG offered in MMB beforehand, or a airport offer (AUP) - earn at the higher rate.

If you chose to reduce the cost by part paying for a revenue ticket with Avios (generally poor value, but it might be an option for you), you would continue to earn full TPs and Avios.
