Using BA Avios on CX - flexibility?

I may need to travel to Hong Kong next week and living up north, Manchester is around 90 minutes away (car or train) so considering flying direct with Cathay Pacific as they have MAN-HKG flights about 5x per week.

The problem is I may need to stay in Hong Kong past my return date so thinking of using Avios as while travelling in economy is generally considered not the best use of points, I understand reward flights offer good flexibility.

Therefore can Cathay Pacific flights booked online using BAEC be changed using the same website? Anything else I should consider?

Did have half a thought of simply buying the cheapest MAN-HKG return ticket (think Turkish are around £350) and if I need to stay longer, don't bother using the inward leg and book a one-way on BAEC instead.

You will want to book this as two singles, if only because you will find your HKG-UK booking is much cheaper as carrier surcharge exHKG is pretty much zero.

Avios bookings can be changed up to 24 hrs before the flight, but can only be changed if the flight you want to change to has reward availability. The cost of doing the change is a few of £35 per person.

Many thanks. Taking your idea a stage further, I suppose I could book the inbound flight when in Hong Kong so avoiding the £35 fee. A lot of reward availability at the moment.

You could but that would be a big gamble since there is no guarantee there would be availability once you are out there. It is not a gamble I would be comfortable with for the sake of £35.
