The service generally gets cancelled over Christmas and new year plus reduced to 1 flight a day during e.g. August where they do maintenance. Some years BA are better organised and don't event permit bookings. There was a spell earlier this year where there were a few tech issues as well.
It is not a sign of it being cut back.
I remember my first flight n BA01 was on 3rd January 2013. It was 90% full.

If you can't change it online, you will need to call BA. As BA has cancelled the flight, you certainly have the option of a full refund without penalty.
Before accepting any reroute on another day, or even one of the CW services xLHR, I would price those anew. If they can be purchased for less, do that and take the refund of your xLCY tickets.
