Must I take the flight to earn the miles/tier points?

I am 10 tier points short of reaching the next AVios level and I want to get to the next level before making a long haul booking. I have found a cheap domestic flight to get me the points I need. If I book but do not turn up for the flight will I still earn the points?

No. You must fly in order to earn the TPs.

You must travel. If you are a no show the avios/TPs will not post.

To expand on these replies, use the thread below as a guide to airports where it's easy to get off a plane and then back on again, so that you can complete your return quickly.

The only issue is that you usually can't book a cash, return ticket for immediate turnaround because of MCT restrictions.

It would be possible to book a single in a class that provides 10TPs, and then a RFS single for the return - not too sure how that would work out cost-wise though.

The answer to the question asked in the thread title is: Yes
The answer the question asked in the actual post is: No

MCT = Minimum Connection Time. A connection is only valid if it is equal to or above this.
RFS = Reward Flight Saver. Fixed price reward flight option for BA shorthaul.

Minimum Connection Time, and

Reward Flight Saver (used as shorthand on this forum to mean a short-haul redemption).

MCT - Minimum connection time
RFS - Reward flight saver

Just in case you haven't realised, you don't need to wait until you've got those last 10 tier points before making the long haul booking - as long as you've reached the new status at the time you fly the long haul you'll get the status benefits
