Business on 747 or First on 777
Looking to book a trip from YYZ to Heathrow via British Airways and have the choice between:
Business Class on BA 747: 55K avios + $450
First class on BA 777: 75K avios + $450
I would be saving 20,000 avios and time schedule fits a bit better with the flight on the 747 but wondering if there's significant gap between the two considering the difference in flight configurations (upper decker vs. non)?

777 F is better than 747 J even than 747 upper deck J. More space, better food and wine, more comfortable bed, etc.
It's up to you whether that's worth 20k Avios and a worse schedule. Perhaps if you have a lot of Avios and few opportunities to use them, then go for it. If you could really use that 20k Avios for somewhere else, you might decide not to do that.

If you won't particularly miss the 20,000 Avios F by the hugest of country miles!
Making the fair assumption it's a night flight if you think that 20,000 may be the make or break between being able to take another J flight or not, then I'd slum it in J

one thing that i have found flying J and F from YVR is that i don't really care if i skip the meal in J. i'd rather get as much sleep as possible and it's barely over an 8 hour flight on some days. The dinner service in F has always been slow. I don't usually finish for close to three hours after wheels up. that'll give me a bit over four hours of sleep. plus one crew member usually holds me down while the other pours substantial quantities of decent champagne, white wine, red wine, and a tumbler full of cognac down my gullet and i stumble into the CCR in a stupor. never happens on the upper deck.

There must be something wrong with this board if the impression has been given that J can be better than F. Lots of people ask this question so must have gained the view from reading the endless posts criticsising F that it simply is not worth it. Hey ho.

I'll swim against the tide and say I would do J in these circs. It's a night flight so I'd want to sleep most of it and although the F bed is unquestionably better, I'd keep the 20k Avios for another trip. I manage well enough in J.
That said, if this is the first chance to try F then go for it.

F all the way - the ability to eat on the ground, get your head down after a quick nightcap and be really comfy is much better. Last time I tried to decline meal service on a short east coast - lhr J trip, the crew didn't know what to do, literally. Took a couple of hours to finish the meal service - even without having a main course. Then went to sleep for about 2 hrs only to wake to find someone had been installed in the empty seat next to me whose snoring had woken me up ... then the crew noise kept me awake for the rest of the flight. Next trip, went F and slept solidly for about 4 -5 hrs after takeoff, not disturbed by meal service or anything.
