SLC or PHX direct LHR 747 vs 787-9

First class tickets 787 out of SJC or 747 out of PHX. Not sure if 747 v1 or 2. BA flight using AA award travel. Nostalgia says 747 but modern amenities says 787-9. What truly are the benefits of one or the other?

I'd take the 787-9.

I love the 747, but for a long flight the 787 will have you stepping off feeling much better

Another option I have is a direct LAX to LHR A380-800. Only able to book one first class saver but can book two business. I've got the one first class on hold, considering getting one business class also, let my wife take first class. All flights will originate LAX or SBA(Santa Barbara) so like the direct options. Wondering about the difference with business vs first class on that A380, first class seems like such a no brainier given the fees are the same and only 12.5k miles extra, it's a $12k tix! Special occasion 25th anniversary so want it to be easy and memorable as possible. Wondering if first class might open up later and could change from business to first. Any possibility of that? Most seats available given its Towards endothelial year.....

I would still advocate the 787-900 to SJC, with so few passengers it will feel more premium and it's a superb bit of kit. The reason for doing PHX on the 747 would be if you had never done it before and would never likely have a chance to do it again. The 787 will be around for a good while now.

It's been awhile since doing a 747 and that was economy, try 30 plus years. But, I'm into the best seat, especially international for the 10 plus hours and the best experience as far as sleep, entertainment and food/booze. Sounds like the 787 is the best option although the 380 was interesting, given the size and the infrequency of that option.

and if you read the other thread: one bathroom for all of F on the 789.

some people avoid due to that...

I would really hope not, it is a great aircraft to fly in. There are 3 more bathrooms just 2 rows into CW.

Hi Jonesdds I would absolutely agree the 789. I had a couple of teething / snag problems, but having completed loads of F on the 747 I did enjoy the 789 a lot on the very long 14 hour sector I flew. The single bathroom did not inconvenience me! Have a look at the TR in my signature

Actually they do have 747 to PHX flight. I am going back home nonstop on the entire 747-400.

I suspect that the OP knows this but is unsure which 747 version flies in and out of PHX (it's the low J version but makes no difference for F).

I would go for the 787 only because I haven't flown it yet :p BA will probably being flying the 747 to PHX until the bitter end of the aircrafts lifetime.

And the 787 bathrooms are far, far more pleasant than those on the 747.

For F? I cannot say I have ever noticed a difference whilst being in F.
