Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Matrix seems to be returning results more quickly, and thus less accurately when search parameters are wide, than I'm used to.

Still seeing decent summer fares though - under €1600 for Europe to Hawaii with an early Finnish. P on the Hawaii legs. AA I fare.

Hello Esteemed TP Runners

I've been lurking for a while and thanks to all of the great info, now feel informed enough to not look like a tit (hopefully), and ask for some help...

I currently have 100 TP and would like to accelerate to Gold (1500 TP's), which I'd then like to try my hand at having the status matched on the various other alliances, before embarking on an adventure around the world - rat race be gone!

So, cutting to the chase - I thought I'd start with the exDub (DUB-LHR-JFK-PHX-HNL-PHX-JFK-LHR-DUB) at the start of April.

Dates: 2nd to 6/7th April

I've found this via Matrix/Google Flights:

DUB-LHR-JFK-PHX-HNL-PHX-JFK-LHR-DUB - J/I/A/P/P/A/I/J - Seems to be 1200 points for £1274 - not bad at £0.91 per TP

Link below for anyone who is interested:
http://goo.gl/flights/EriU

So some questions:

1) I'd like to get 1360 TP's (or more) but can't seem to get this at a decent price adding in MAD or HEL - Can anyone advise on how to maximise the TP's on this journey?

2) I have an overnight layover at JFK - I've read about some people combining TP run + Hotel, where the hotel is next to nothing - any tips on including a hotel in this trip?

3) I think I've picked out the decent flights, but if anyone spots something not quite right please shout - I don't want to be stuck on an old AA 777 for instance

My TP year finishes on 8th April, so if I can get 1360 in this run, I might tack on another run before this one to get to the magic 1500 before then...

Much appreciated!

Wolfie.

Position to Jersey (and back) in Business for 2 x 40 TPs. Jersey to Gatwick to Amsterdam return for 4 x 40 TPs.

Alternatively, see whether Finnair offer something beyond Helsinki at a reasonable price. Stockholm? 2 x 80 TPs for the Helsinki leg and 2 x 40 TPs for the connecting flight.

CPH-LAX - £1,125
CPH-HNL - £1,196

Back to back at CPH is very easy as well.
Related, I thought I would add this as it has some elements that might be beneficial to BA EC members. I'm not an EC member so I don't fully understand everything here, but from what I understand, a HEL flight is good because of distance and a US domestic is good because of first class.

So anyhow, I booked
HEL-LHR-DFW-SAT and then JFK-LHR-CPH in J (lots of different fare codes involved but J travel except for DFW-SAT in F) for €1238 (£945?).
Flights with a combination of AA, AY (edit, sorry, no AY there, but it was available) and BA. Many permutations of carriers were available, both of the intercontinental legs were available with both AA and BA. It was possible to do HEL-LHR-ORD-SAT instead of DFW for the same price, and a few days ago I remember seeing a LGA-BOS-LHR-CPH option for the return though I didn't get the option to book it this time.

Might or might not be a good TP run but if it's useful then great.

Search this thread for an excellent TP run report to Vilnius (VNO) via HEL with AY by corporate-wage-slave. Exactly 240 TPs.

hi wolfie i have pm'd you about this as somthing i may want to do as well without the stayovers.

not sure if a silly question but for the flights that land at night and your next flight is the next morning do you just ....stay in the airport? for those hours... is that something thats common.

my question is serious i actually have never been to these airports so have no clue if they close doors for midnight untill morning flights as some do in uk....

Wolfie.
I can't really help, but welcome to FT, and it's great that you've done your research first. So, you sound as non-tit as they come

Only your math is a bit out. It's 1274/1200 = £1.06 per TP

not sure if a silly question but for the flights that land at night and your next flight is the next morning do you just ....stay in the airport? for those hours... is that something thats common.

my question is serious i actually have never been to these airports so have no clue if they close doors for midnight untill morning flights as some do in uk....
Most people on here would use an airport hotel for the overnight. In the scheme of things it's not that big an expense (<10% of the airfare), though different airports have different set-ups. E.g. Plenty of airport hotels at LAX a short shuttle ride away, but JFK (in my experience) is a bit of a pain - AirTran to a desolate lot for infrequent shuttles etc.

Hi there - long time lurker, first time poster here.

Is it necessary for you to travel exDUB? I've been trying to price up something similar to you, but using using the exCPH fare, which allows stopovers for €75. Whilst I had no luck with the fare that allowed stopovers, I managed to get the following to price at £1254 under ILN7S4Z1 on several dates in July, August and November. Availability in March/April seems to be more limited (based on the few searches I ran), but I found this:

Copenhagen (CPH) to Kahului (OGG) - Mon, Mar 21

American Airlines Inc. 8991 Dep: 8:55AM Arr: 11:30AM 1h 35m Airbus A320 Business (I)

Finnair 667 Dep: 5:45PM Arr: 6:25PM 1h 40m Airbus A321 (Sharklets) Business (I)

Total airfare & taxes £1,253.22

This would be 1360 TP as opposed to the 1200 from Dublin. It's no good for me, as I'm looking for something that allows me to stopover in NYC on the way back (and I'm not in a hurry to do the run), but it seems like it might be what you're looking for...

Dates for the fare:
PERMITTED 21MAR 16 THROUGH 15APR 16 OR 22JUN 16 THROUGH
04SEP 16 OR 19NOV 16 THROUGH 30NOV 16 OR 23DEC 16 THROUGH
02JAN 17 ON THE OUTBOUND TRANSATLANTIC SECTOR.
