Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under Ł300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under Ł500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for Ł520

ah ha thanks a lot, now that rings a very faint bell...must have been a while ago though but the 12,500 must be that!

I was a bit worried they'd take them back!

There's one route at post 74 you could look at and other ideas in the wiki. Most people will be taking a cheap positioning flight to DUB/CPH/OSL or similar to start a TP run.

I suppose for maxmium possible and any dates. at this stage i will just go with how the TP route is best placed. so flexible on dates. will just plan a few days off work

I'm starting from Chicago which might be the problem but so far have looked at
ORD-LAX-MIA-SJO-MIA-ORD
and then
ORD-LAS-MIA/MCO-LAS-ORD
and then
ORD-NYC-LAX-ORD etc

However, all of these are pricing out around $1500-$2300

Can anyone suggest an alternative starting from ORD? I'm trying to find at least one 210TP route from coast to coast. Many thanks in advance
Friday evenings somewhat limit your choices, as it's a crowded time to fly, and there are not that many options for heading west after 7pm. Also many of the 2000+ mile flights do not have cheaper first seats available given the relatively short notice.

There are some options such as PHL-CLT-PHX-LAX-PHL leaving on Friday and returning on Sunday. Perhaps booking that and a separate ticket for ORD-PHL could work? The CLT-PHX routing feels like a waste though, but the PHL-PHX non-stop is adding $500 to the price.

Welcome to FT - shockingly poor that our resident ambassador hasn't extended that yet!

Good proposal for a few extra TPs, but I think the PHL-DUB aircraft might be unappealing for an overnight. Anytime I've looked at the route it's been an old Boeing, but I gather there are some A330s for the legacy US routes to DUB still knocking around the schedule

Booked my first TP run of the year. Had a Ł50 off offer from Amex if I booked a flight for over Ł150 with them, so rude note to... Ł242 (net Ł192) for LHR-MAD-BIO-MAD-LHR and 120 TPs, so Ł1.60 a pop net of discount. Topped off with a night at a Holiday Inn to complete a couple of IHG Accelerate tasks (50,000 points or so as a result)

Late breakfast in the CCR, a 45 minute transit in MAD followed by a couple of hours at the Guggenheim and dinner, with an evening departure on the Sunday! If I was going this weekend I'd get 19c temperatures on Sunday...

Given the FX rate if BA/IB have an issue and make me miss my MAD connection on outbound I'd have a 4 hour delay and a net flight cost of zero!

Welcome to FlyerTalk, please excuse my lackadaisical welcoming skills.

The A330 now has fully lie flat seats. The 757 does not.

The A330s seem notably absent around Easter and summer (when I've been looking). Are they just used in winter?

It's been the case in the past that they have only been used in the summer so i don't think it's a summer vs winter thing it's more a summer schedule vs winter schedule thing - i.e. they are sometimes in (and then usually for the full 6 months of that particular schedule) and sometimes out (and replaced by a 757 which I would avoid for overnight TATL and probably TATL alltogether).

Thanks. Time to go and beat up ita matrix again! Ah, of course that's after Easter... I resolutely refuse to fly the 757 overnight on a transatlantic! (Daytime is ok)

I'm "glad" others keep finding 757 TATL sectors ... I thought it was just my inept searches! Not keen on 757 TATL at any time of day.

In AA Business, that seat is only beaten by the 77W. very comfortable, a d wide when flat thanks to neat hollowed out area under the armrst. Individual window seats highly recommended!
