Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under 300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under 500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for 520

Welcome to the forum vxc, I hope you'll stick around and join in!

In general this thread is all about booking particular trips to maximise the number of tier points you can get for minimal money. Have you made it through the (excellent) guide at the top? If not, it's really worth reading it all. Hopefully the answers below will make it clearer what's going on!

Pretty much yes. As long as you book into the right classes of travel (business or first).

Quite often these are return flights just like you'd usually buy, albeit with a particular route. But in (nearly) all cases they are one single ticket, not a set of individual flights bought separately.

For example, the return you quoted is basically just a return flight from Jersey to Egypt, on BA. Since it's on BA it's inevitable you have to go via London in each direction - in this case, the cheapest way is to go via Gatwick. As the line says, the person who found it was able to find that fare on ba.com.

J and I are both representative of business class. (You will often see "J" used here to mean business class more generally, but here it refers to the specific "fare bucket" on the flight that you book into.)

Very rarely, since business and first class offer substantially better earning opportunities than economy does - key is the fact that discount economy often offers hardly any Tier Points, whereas business or first typically offer the same amount of Tier Points whether heavily discounted or full whack.

I just wanted to post to say well spotted on a run I really should have taken out of the wiki when I updated it. LGW-SSH was 140 TPs each way in CE but is now 8o TPs, and in any case the route has been suspended for several months now with no clear re-start date.
Thanks for the response, i hope to get a clearer picture, i had a read through the start, its alot to take in for sure! i will re read until i can make sense of it.

While you can (on the booking page, look for the link to "Multi-city/stopovers"), it's not a good experience - in general it will only give you a set of flight options without the price, until the very end. So it's quite time consuming to use.

Many people on the board start with Google Flights which lets you construct a multi-city itinerary and search by price much more easily.

You can also book on other oneworld airline websites.

If flying to the USA for example you can book on aa.com

However if you are just starting you need to remember that you will require 2 flights on AA metal or 2 flights on a BA flight number on another oneworld member so your first run might be best booked via the phone with BA if more than one flight.

Book any internal flights within the USA on AA flight numbers as you will be classed as first for BA points purposes. Booking these on BA flight numbers will see your earning set against business. Not as good.

The BA call center will allow you to book a combination of AA and BA flight numbers on one trip.

These will often start from a European airport to reduce the cost.

Hi guys,

Like vxc, I'm also new here. I've recently moved to London and am starting from scratch with BA (after enjoying years of CX silver). I've never done mileage/tier point runs because I've always had reason to travel with work so I've never really had to "work" for my status.

I've read the guide at the top of the thread but may have somewhat of a silly question. Since most of those journey's do not originate from London, what do Londoners do to get to those places...wouldn't those trips come with costs too?

Also, I didn't understand the point of how to book these stopovers that vxc and typical mentioned. How do you get BA to show you the connections?

Thanks!

Well, sometimes it's 50 or so to get from say London to Dublin on BA or Easyjet, Ryanair etc (can be 9.99 from MAN-DUB, or Liverpool etc occasionally on Ryanair). Other people may use 4500 Avios + 17.50? for a redemption flight - I do quite a lot especially if you're earning 46000 Avios back as a Gold member doing DUB-HNL.

Examples for Sun 7th Feb:

LHR-DUB

Aer Lingus 88
BA 104 hand baggage; 114 checked baggage (can knock 25 off for 3750 Avios and I earn 625)
BA 4000 Avios + 17.50 for a checked baggage redemption ticket; 7750 Avios + 25 for business class (selling at 402)

May be cheaper, may be more expensive some days / times.

Welcome!
Taxes and airport fees in the UK are relatively high, whereas in several European countries, at least in Economy, they are really quite low.

My typical strategy, which I know is shared by many other here, is to book a 17.50+4500 Avios flight ex-UK, to benefit from the cap in cash fees (there's something annoying about paying 800 for DUB-LON-SFO return in Business and then BA wanting 80 for a LHR-DUB economy single!) and then a hand-baggage only ("HBO") economy single DUB-LHR. Works with places like Spain and Norway too, and many others. The cheapest HBO fares on these routes can be picked up for around 30, and will earn a Gold member 625 or so Avios, worth at least a fiver.

If you want to check luggage on your final LON-X-LON sectors, an Avios flight comes with baggage allowance. Have a look at booking two one ways as a DUB-LON single Avios flight can have taxes and fees around 7.

Could also look at paying for the flight over to DUB using part-pay Avios (up to 4,500) - another good way that then earns you back some TP & Avios.

Cheapest way to earn 280 TP

Im looking for the cheapest way to earn 280TP. Im thinking either a LH return to anywhere, or a LH in Y to the US and then a cheap domestic first?

Any dates from March 18th - April 18th?

Cheapest I've found so far is,

DUB-LHR-BKK Reward Booking 23.5k Avios +117 in Y (0 TP's)
BKK-KUL-DEL Return 344 in J (360 TP's)
BKK-LHR in Y 233 (25TP's)

Total 694

TIA

I've deliberately picked the later flight on the RJ-190 to allow for a cheaper positioning flight on Norwegian for 80.

Total cost 564 for 360tp and no need for a hotel.

Well done KARFA on such a comprehensive refresh - it's now an even richer mine of information than last year so I'm sure we'll all be Gold in no time .

I'm trying to get my family summer holiday sorted out - based in London but will to travel to a close(ish) starting point with the following sort of routing:

Ideally starting on 7 August but few days either side fine.

XXX - LON - JFK (stop for 10 days) - (PHX?) - SFO (stop for a week) - (JFK?) - LHR - YYY

DUB / BLL - home of LEGOLAND! / CPH seem to be the best bets with the current sales for XXX and YYY.

I'm sure I saw it at < 1,000 for J (and F with AA if splitting transcon) but I wasn't fast enough to book it. I've been trying ITA and it doesn't seem to spit out as many results as it used to if I try multiple start / end points. The cheapest I can get now is 4,432 for 2 adults / 2 children - I guess 1.1K isn't bad for 770 TPs but can anyone do better?

Any suggestions gratefully received.....
