Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Yes the oneworld "joint venture" fares to/from North America are issued on an MPM basis instead of a directed routing.

There are some exceptions but on the whole you need get two transfers in Europe, two in North America, and a load of miles to play with.

I'm getting different prices with a stop of more than 20 hours in London which strikes me as odd as I would've thought it should be 24?

This would force me to take the 5pm-ish AA flight out (which is the latest one I can price at ex-DUB prices if I start in DUB the evening before), which I believe is a 772 so not guaranteed wifi.
This is true.
However there might not be any seats left on the latter service in the "I" class.

Normally this would not matter, but BA CityFlyer flights do not get put in "J" when you are flying across the Atlantic under an AA code.

Thanks KARFA. How annoying - 1908 miles as the crow (and presumably plane) flies. Would have had me back to gold in 6 months if it was 80TPs...

I may move that section on "Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?" in to one of the reference posts and then have some links in the wiki to it. It is a very useful section btw. That way the wiki then becomes just runs people have added and all reference information in in the posts at the start of the thread.

Superb work, KARFA - great work on the intro posts, really nicely done! ^ Here's to lots of TP bargains this year! Have got one HNL trip booked already and sneaked that into A class for the JFK-LAX sectors, so looking forward to booking some more once I return to the Northern Hemisphere (via QF F using Avios, booked pre-April '15 deval, naturally )

Done. First time I've updated the wiki as I've just recently got above the threshold for the number of posts

That's what I thought but it just seems to push it into D on ITA. I'm using the calendar search. It's a while since I did one of these I am out of touch!

Should I be entering preferred transit points or flight numbers? I have tried both.

Firstly, many many thanks to KARFA for all the hard putting this lot together again. This is my favourite thread across the whole interweb thing!

I have a question regarding miles awarded for the TP run I did last week...I was due 39,000 miles(ish) and I have just noticed that there is an additional entry on the BA statement which simply states:
"Special Promotion" and there is an extra 12,500 miles awarded.

Does anyone have any idea what this is from/for?

cheers, John

Are you exceeding the MPM of the preferred fare?
Is there availability in the appropriate buckets on your intra-Europe flights?

Have you tried a few days or weeks earlier or later than the dates you are searching?

Failing that if you share your search and/or your results, I'm sure you'll get help diagnosing what's going on...

it could be you registering for the transatlantic promotion which they ran to celebrate their 5 years. From memory BA offered it to nonUK people so i had to register using my iberia plus account to get the bonus. I flew to new york return over xmas and can see two transactions called 'special promotion' for 12.500 each (the offer was received 25k avios/AA miles for every TATL return in biz or first)

New points collector assistance

HI,

I am new points collector and came across this via searching on google. i want to get myself to gold status and was wondering if someone could take the time to explain how these trips work. Based on below which i have copy/pasted from earlier in the thread.

30JUL | £0.93/TP | £335 | 360 | JER-LGW-SSH-LGW-JER | J/I/I/J | ba.com

Is the general Idea to just airport hop and upon completion of the journey you will amount the indicated points?

Are these individual flights booked or some kind of multi flight journeys booked together?

is the above formula based on economy class?

i would appreciate help whats so ever as i was planning to build it via work and long winded process, but by finding this it seems there is a faster way.

What i suppose i dont understand on above is how can it be so cheap to gain so many points?

I am from Scotland UK so if anyone is aware of trips that include departure and return on this it would be great

thanks

calvin

I am from Scotland UK so if anyone is aware of trips that include departure and return on this it would be great

thanks

calvin
Hi vxc and welcome. I am sure someone will help with more information to answer your queries soon - and in the meantime please read the reference posts at the start of the thread which should give you some information.

I just wanted to post to say well spotted on a run I really should have taken out of the wiki when I updated it. LGW-SSH was 140 TPs each way in CE but is now 8o TPs, and in any case the route has been suspended for several months now with no clear re-start date.
