Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

Also, my search is now showing "Iberia (IB) ILN8S4C1" on the fare rules & restrictions page rather than your ILN4S4Z1. Not sure there's a big difference here, or if its the same rules and restrictions just under Iberia rather than BA?
Also that IB ILN8S4C1 fare is a more expensive advanced purchase fare. What dates are you looking for?

exDUB ILN8S4C1 Advanced Purchase Fare

This is a 28 day advanced purchase exDUB fares. It is obviously not as cheap as one of the sale fares, but it is still a very good price.

The fare does cover travel dates for mid and late 2017. However, if you are looking for mid and late 2017 you need to bear in mind that AA flights are only released at 330 days whilst BA flights are released at 355 days. Therefore at the moment AA flights are only for sale up to mid-May and not available for any of the travel dates for June onwards. If you try and price anything which would have to include AA flights for June 2017 it will simply say no flights on itamatrix. Obviously there is no issue pricing a BA metal only itinerary such as DUB-LHR-JFK for June 2017 and you can do this online at BA.com.

As this is an advanced purchase fare there is no end date or ‘ticket by’ date.

Example prices for Easter 2017, all price with a LHR connection. Slightly lower prices may be found by taking the direct AA DUB-US flights:

JFK - €1,533 (~£1,175)
MIA - €1,596 (~£1,224)
ORD - €1,720 (~£1,319)
LAS - €1,746 (~£1,338)
LAX - €1,849 (~£1,417)
HNL - €1,804 (~£1,383) (priced with LHR, JFK, and PHX connections)

There is a BA DUB-LCY service which started in October 2014 and there is an early morning arrival in to LCY you can do a same day connection from DUB to LCY connecting on to BA1 departing at 0945. Any booking made on BA1-4 will only now earn 140 TPs.

There is also a AY DUB-HEL service starting in March 2015 which you may be able to add in, so DUB-HEL-LHR/LCY-JFK- etc. DUB-HEL gets 40 TPs and the 80 TP rate would only apply to HEL-LHR as shorthaul+ is only exUK. Adding HEL may increase the price by £80-100 due to mileage restrictions.

Another alternative is DUB-MAD-LHR or DUB-LHR-MAD before doing the TATL. As there are more and more EI flights with BA codeshares now you could also do routings like DUB-AMS-LHR which would get you 60 TPs compared to DUB-LHR which would get you 40 TPs. Bear ni mind there is no business cabin on EI shorthaul. DUB-MAN-LHR would also be possible, but this would get you 20+20 TPs so no more than DUB-LHR.

Travel from inbound transatlantic sector must commence no earlier than the first Sunday after departure of the outbound transatlantic sector.
This allows positioning for your inbound TATL prior to the Sunday. You can therefore set off from HNL on Friday night arriving in PHX on Saturday morning, do PHX-JFK during Saturday, have a night in NYC on Saturday night and then do your TATL on Sunday.

Travel from last stopover must commence no later than midnight 12 months after departure from fare origin.
Stopovers can be done in Europe. Bear mind the cost of doing a stopover in London on the way out is a lot more expensive since APD is £142, so the total additional cost of adding a stopover in London would be €75 + £142 + any other airport fees. As the fee for stopovers in the US has been changed to €600 I imagine no one would now be interested in doing a stopover there.

If you want to stopover in London on the way back it is a lot cheaper since the APD would only be £26 for the LHR-DUB leg. Therefore at fairly minimal additional cost you can stopover in London on the return to go home, and then do the last leg some weeks or months later at your convenience.

Code:
ORIGINATING EUROPE -
UNLIMITED STOPOVERS PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION IN
        EUROPE AT EUR 75.00 EACH.
       CHILD/INFANT DISCOUNTS APPLY.
AND - UNLIMITED STOPOVERS PERMITTED IN EACH DIRECTION IN
THE UNITED STATES/CANADA/MEXICO AT EUR 600.00
              EACH.
             CHILD/INFANT DISCOUNTS APPLY.
2 transfers permitted in each direction free.
So 2 in Europe and 2 in the US each way.

An overnight connection of up to 24 hrs between flights would be counted as a transfer, anything beyond that would be a stopover.

To HNL the optimal routing is something like DUB-HEL-LHR-XXX-LAX/PHX-HNL and return which gets you 1360 TPs. If you leave HEL out coming back then reduce by 80 TPs, and if you leave HEL out both out and back reduce to 1200 TPs. XXX can be any east coast city provided that you don't do JFK-LAX where you can only get 140 TPs, and XXX-LAX/PHX is on a two class > 2,000 mile flight.

If you look at post 1 of this thread or this post there is a list of >2,000 mile flights.

AA vs BA flight numbers for TPs & avios:
- For two class domestic flights in the US you need to book under the AA flight number to get the domestic first TP (210/60). Booking under the BA codeshare will only get you business TPs (140/40) even though you will be in the same seats.
- For three class transcons (A321T) on the JFK-LAX and JFK-SFO routes it doesn't matter since you book in to the middle business cabin anyway, not the first cabin.
- For international flights it doesn't matter, it is 140/40 TPs whatever flight number you book under so AA or oneworld codeshare.
- Avios will always be more under a BA flight number, but not much. Avios under an AA flight is 125% miles flown, and under a BA codeshare is 150% of miles flown. Tier avios bonuses are the same under AA or BA.

Permitted
19 March through 12 April or
25 June through 22 August or
23 November through 30 November or
18 December through 04 January
on the outbound transatlantic sector.
Note that the travel dates refer to the first transatlantic sector which means your TATL, and it also means you can do DUB-LHR on the 24 June and then the LHR-JFK on 25 June.

Reservations for all sectors are required at least 28 days before departure.

I'm also now toying with the idea of taking OGG departure on or before Jan 4th, fitting in a exHNL RT run after Jan 8, then coming back from OGG also after Jan 8. If I do things right, I figure enough TPs to renew BA Gold earned after Jan 8, plus enough Avios to make an RT reward trip to somewhere nice in combination with a 2-4-1 (and maybe GUF2)

The sale fare ILN4S4Z1 does not cover mid March or any dates after 4 January 2017.

The more expensive advanced purchase fare ILN8S4C1 does cover dates over Easter next year, hence why you are seeing it if you search for March 2017.

Thanks Karfa. Those facts were obvious to me given the fare rules already posted (by you I might add!) but maybe you're reiterating them for the benefit of others. :-)

I only answered the question about what I was trying to do because you asked it, and who knows, you might have had other suggestions.

If anyone cares, I've made progress on playing with permutations and now expect to book DUB-LHR-CLT-LAX-HNL / HNL-OGG-HNL / HNL-LAX-MIA-NAS-MIA-LAX-HNL / HNL-LAX-CLT-LHR-DUB with vacation stays in OGG and NAS and an itinerary that gets me 1500 TPs after Jan 8th. The first 600 TP earned on the outbound from DUB do nothing for me, except lifetime totals I guess.

I show 1520 TPs earned after Jan 8th at a total cost of £2103.52pp, so £1.38 per TP. But hell, that's alot of flying!

For those who can count all TPs for their BA year, that's just £0.99 per TP.

I was going to say that was a high price dmp1991 but I realised you have a separate run to NAS in there. Have a quick look at PTY just in case that is cheaper, that has certainly been the go to cheap destination from MIA over the last year or two.

That looks like a fantastic itinerary and something I really want to do after April next year. How did you plan how many nights you were going to do at each place? I'm guessing there is a lot of trial and error in planning something likeep that? Any advice welcome.

I actually tried PTY and BAQ first based on seeing them mentioned repeatedly as targets for previous TP runs. But then I got wise and rapid-fired on possible destinations with ITA Matrix using AA's route map to identify possible destinations all over Central and South America. I don't remember if PTY was cheaper to be honest, but BAQ was definitely cheaper. However, travel to BAQ and PTY couldn't be completed on the same calendar day, so I would have spent more days traveling, plus incurred more hotel costs, than my plan to NAS where I get more relaxation/vacation days in.

Hi Charlie. I was actually limited on having to travel TATL no later than Jan 4th in order to capture the sale fare DUB-HNL. Then I simply looked for TP runs possible from HNL. After a few attempts, I realized that cross US routes to int'l destinations from the US East Coast would net me the best bang-for-the-buck due to the 210 TP for AA first booked as biz. After realizing this, I simply used ITA Matrix to search for cheapest possible destinations with maximum number of transfers allowed. You can put a number of possible destination airport codes in like "SJU,GCM,NAS,BAQ,PTY" and let Matrix work for you to sort them by cost. However, when doing that, remember not to have any transfer points in your advanced routing rules or you might get artifically affected results.

From there, in my particular case, I looked for this run to be after Jan 8th and tried to minimize the total # of days with flights in them. (But this was secondary to making sure I would get enough TPs to retain Gold.).

From there, it was just a matter of deciding when I needed to be back to work and then balancing per personal preference time spent in OGG vs NAS.

ITA's ability to "matrix" search is definitely a big help here. As is the ability to view it's results by time bars. Don't forget to mouse-over the timebars if type of plane is important to you. And also to double-check the class of the booking.

Yes, definitely worth look at all the Caribbean and Central American destinations on AA from MIA to see what is cheapest. I am not convinced I would venture in to Colombia myself either so perhaps BAQ was best avoided.

I've been playing with a schedule for a DUB-LAS trip via LHR and JFK getting me around 780TPs for c.£1,200. Now, the issue is that when I've finished constructing the flights and click buy on AA, our friends across the pond think I'm in Eire and quote in Euros.

Being resourceful I entered the itinerary directly on AA but this time as a Brit and couldn't get the same routing (kept adding stopovers which ruin the 210TP legs).

My question is...is there a way to import from Google starting in Dub but with the ability to pay in GBP?

Don't want to risk losing the flights or stuffing it up so my default is to buy them and take the hit on FX rates on the card, but it would be lovely if I could do it properly from the outset.

Anyone with more experience like to help a complex routing virgin?

Ta

Did you use the multi-city search for Schedule, with "Number of Stops: 1 or less" and "Show flight results: 50 flights"?

Ta, yes I did but for some reason the non-stop JFK to LAS wouldn't come up for both outbound and return it just proposed PHX or CLT as the options. Trawled through them all and then retried doing the booking from scratch. Have the correct routing 'reserved' and I'm about to pop out for my weekly shoot so I'll give it a little time and look to complete it when I get back.

In the interest of getting it right I'll try the GBP route once more but I still feel like I'm saving a heck of a lot compared to the straight BA booking so a few extra quid in currency isn't going to break my wallet right now.

You know JFK-PHX will be 210TPs and PHX-LAS another 60TPs so you should come ahead with even more points than your original JFK-LAS for 210TPs.
