Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. the guide to using ITA matrix in post #2 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year). Alternatively, booking a return to one of the 40 tier point destinations with one way in CE and the return in ET (or vice versa if cheaper). Bilbao, Jersey and Amsterdam seems the most cost effective for this.

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VNO via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

The return on Easter Sunday still looks fine at all times at the low price point - we've taken the late BA182 and the upper deck still has plenty of space - so that possibly suggests this sale is attracting more people than usual who want a longer break as opposed to TP runners.
I think most people in this thread are doing "TP holidays" as someone once defined them. You have to be pretty hard core to do a back to back in HNL

I think it's one of the itineraries that really require calling in, so the call centre gets an inordinately high proportion of these bookings. I certainly wouldn't call in to book a simple round trip, given the wait times.

Quick question: If a TA makes a booking for me can I still UuA?

A couple of times when I've wanted to make amendments online to TA bookings it says I have to go back to the TA to change the booking... Does this apply to UuA?

Hello everyone,

I've been lurking in the forums for a couple of months reading up on the basics and I wanted to thank all of you regular contributors for making everything so clear for newcomers to this.

My BAEC membership year comes to an end in March and I am a poultry 20 TP off Bronze! I'm aiming to do a short TP run on 5 March as a result, as I only have that day free and can't stay overnight, looking at JER and AMS after reading through the forums and TP run master thread, and using ITA Matrix.

In order to get 10 TP each way I need to be in buckets K, L, M, N, S, V, but I can't find anything to AMS in ITA Matrix that doesn't involve at least one leg of Q, O or G. Am I barking up the wrong tree with this run, or am I going wrong in the way I am searching? Also, can you refine the search by bucket in ITA Matrix, to save opening the Details drop down in every result?

Many thanks in advance!

Yes, but not if you have non BA flights in there. See the section on "Upgrading Using Avios (UUA)" in post #2 of this thread for more details http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/26033718-post2.html

Yes*, show Advanced options and then in each of the Advance routing codes boxes, insert
BA+ /f bc=Y|bc=B|bc=H|bc=K|bc=L|bc=M|bc=N|bc=S|bc=V
You would have to book by phone quoting the required fare exactly and insist that the booking codes were all correct.

* Well technically no, but this will achieve the result on shorthaul fares

Interesting. Booked a fare on the weekend, asked for price in GBP and EUR. The GBP was exactly 3% more than the EUR fare. Booked in EUR on a non-FX fee card and made a small saving.

Ooh, you dont see many runs in the "old tradition" nowadays !
I have spent a few nice afternoons blissfully asleep on a bench outside MCO waiting to connect.

nice!

did one of those last summer.

sadly, the one I am looking at (PTY - SFO; LAS - PTY with a few stops both ways) is still at GBP 690 but for 980 TPs which is still good GBP/TP

Interesting, can't get anything near this price, GBP578. Tried LAX and PHX using CLT, MCO, MIA, PTY and PHL, MCO, MIA, PTY but GBP578 is the cheapest
