One topic that doesn't get a lot (any!) airtime is leaving the Gold Guest List. It may be an obvious point, but whilst you don't receive new GUF vouchers or partner cards at the start of your next membership year if you're leaving GGL, you are still a GGL member until your card expires (so, in my case, membership year ticked over on April 8th and I was still a GGL member through until May 31st).

This still comes in useful for a key benefit I personally made a lot of use of which was free changes and cancellations on Avios bookings (I travel on an RFS most weeks). If you hadn't made the 1500 TPs required to retain Gold then it would also give you the additional V class redemption availability too. You also still get flagged up on the iPad accordingly as I had a couple of embarrassingly fawning senior crew members approach me on flights in May!

Unless they get back to me with approval tonight I won't be able to book in this INCSALE with GUF and will wait for the next one...
If your TA also honours BA's '24 hours cooling off period' you could book this afternoon and it gives you an extra day to get your eVisa back.

Big thanks to dylanks for this guide.

As a result of reading, I after hitting the 5K managed to use two GGL Jokers with Miles and Guf's on the last day of the collection year thus starting the new year with another two shiny jokers (Three actually as I hit 6K).

I would have just left them and not realised about the two disappearing and being replaced.

First time I have managed to use a GUF as well.

Goal next year is GGL Redemption, GUF2 and 241 combination

I did this last year for a trip to LAS.

Booked WTP on the outbound to GUF into CW, and chose an F seat (back when F was being sold as CW due to the risk of OF), then F back on the A380 out of LAX (booked as CW with the GUF). Whole thing cost me something ridiculous like 79k Avios.

Cheers Behindthecurtain, I'm glad this helped! I certainly received a lot of excellent feedback from the community in gathering this information, and I'm still learning more and making small updates as I receive them.

And not to one-up you or show off, but I managed the following combination for our holiday trip later this year in F: GGL redemption, GUF2 x 2, GUF1, and 241! It was surprisingly straightforward to make this booking.

I agree, there is very little information about leaving GGL.

The bit I'm curious about is avoiding a drop from GGL straight down to Silver which could be a reality for some. If you have a Gold Partner card, could you ask for it to be applied to yourself in the period between dropping to Silver but your GGL card benefits still being valid for the month after membership renewal?

Given the way you assign a partner card, I do not believe it is intended to be used this way and would not be possible to do online. It might be possible for an agent to do this over the phone, but it would not make sense to me as an option.

The Partner cards are a benefit of GGL to give to others, it cannot be given to the GGL to avoid soft landing to Silver.

Same position as you jcm9000. On 3500 at the moment and looking like ending year on 4000. This thread doesn't help temptation to go for the rest. May have to look at heading across to the West coast for a jolly to SJU, PTY or the like!

Maybe a Gold Partner card exchange programme between GGLs would be a workable option

Anyway no sign of that problem posing itself for a good few years yet and hopefully I'll get to LTG in three or four years.

I raise you: LHR to SYD for 4 in peak Xmas period using GGL redemption, GUF2 x 2 and 2 x 241. It's an amazing benefit - 20k of flights for 2k tax. It's what I never complain when hubby travels all the time!

Joker Redemption booking issues

Just completed the booking of the return leg as it became available (+355 days), 10 days after booking the outbound leg. I asked that this be treated as an amendment to the existing booking but the agent answering the GGL number was adamant that the return would have to be a separate booking.

Is this the case ?

2 issues come to mind :

1 - Have I used up both of my jokers in this 1 return booking ?
2 - More concerning, I am told I cannot benefit from the AMEX241 and GUF1&2 vouchers used on the outbound leg !!!!!

The agent said that I should call after 0730 (its now 0155 and I have been on the phone for 55 mins) when the GGL staff start and see if they would allow me to combine the bookings !

On a speared but related point, did I read somewhere that the jokers expire when you requalify, i.e after 3000 TPs

Wow, that's amazing, well done! We had considered something crazy like PHX-LHR-HND or to SYD, but that just seemed like way too much with 3 kids in tow.

My understanding (please correct me if I'm wrong):

1&2) I would definitely call back as that sounds wrong. Calmly explain what happened and see if this can be sorted out by the friendly and helpful GGL team.

For the last point, the first two jokers earned per year expire on your membership date (8th of whenever). Renewal jokers are added on the first date of your new year (9th of whenever). The additional jokers earned at 6000 or higher tier points are valid for one year from the date you earn them.
