Does the "Ex-Gratia" removal/reinstatement of Avios extend expiration?

I posted this question in the big "Avios hacked/audited" thread, but there's some urgency for me to figure this out, so posting a new thread as well. I'm guessing some others are in a similar position...

My wife (along with a lot of other people) had her Avios account zeroed out and then reinstated back in March 2015. The last transaction before that in her account was made in November 2012 and posted in December 2012, so if not for the Ex-Gratia Manual Adjustment transactions, her account would expire either this month or next.

Has anyone figured out whether the Ex-Gratia transactions count toward extending the life of one's Avios account?

My pragmatic suggestion is that you do not wait to test this out. There are several very low cost options for extending the life of your points. I would urge you to do this without delay!

If you search for the topic you will find several threads on options available to you.

I would not rely on the ex-gratia transaction counting.

The following approach is not one I have tested but I believe it may work.

Due to the unique way BA’s IT system was set up, Avios collected in Household Accounts do not currently expire, so my suggestion would be set up a HHA for yourself and add your wife to the HHA.

Thanks @Golfmad, I appreciate the reply. I'm looking at those threads today and will try to find something to do in case I need to, but It seems like the only thing that's very quick & reliable is buying 1000 miles, and I'd rather avoid that if I don't need to - I'm USA-based so some of the options aren't available. (I may be missing something though & I'll keep exploring)

Wait ... what? My wife is already on my HHA, but I'm pretty sure from lots of other posts I've read that HHA accounts can be closed - ie that you have to keep each individual account in a HHA active every 36 months. I'd be thrilled if you're right, though ... any confirmation of this?

edit:
THIS THREAD would seem to indicate that if any member of the HHA has status (not true in our case), then one member earning miles will extend the life of all HHA members' miles. Unfortunaterly that doesn't help us

The official line is if one member of a HHA has Gold or Silver status the balances of other members in the HHA are protected from expiring. However, due to the unique way BA’s IT system was set up…. nudge nudge

Don’t hesitate to call BA. They are pretty open about the system’s deficiencies and will confirm that the Avios belonging to your wife will not expire so long as she remains in a HHA.

I'd just buy 1000 Avios at Ł30 - you would know you're safe for a few years and it's instant
