BA 2217 EDI-LCY (Free seating 15/10)

Hi,

Travelling down to London this pm.

OLCI'd last night and collected by bp at EDI and aircraft type was E190.

Now in the lounge and there has been an announcement that there has been an aircraft swap and that there will be free seating.

Could be interesting but will miss 2D on the E190

Regards

free seating ? do you mean a free for all--no seat allocation ?

Sounds like you're getting shunted on a BAe 146. Enjoy the trip...back in time!

I see lots of strategic elbow usage and placement of carry on bags on the floor to block people trying to get to the front of the boarding queue!

I'd complain and ask for compensation if you are on a non HBO fare as the value of your seat selection has just been diminished! ;-)

Hopefully they enforce the correct boarding procedure and do it strictly via status, so at least there is some form of selection for those who would presumably have already chosen @:-)

IIRC all my Ryanair flights were boarded on a first come first served basis. I never witnessed any jostling or frayed tempers during the boarding process. Quite the opposite in fact....the wife and I managed to get seats together no problem despite the flights being full.

Which tells me it's those with status who create all the problems.

Did you get an email?
It might be the excitement of Jota Aviation with a 146. They're a lovely little charter airline who are doing a lot of work for cityflyer at the moment. I do lots of LCY-GLA and I've managed to get them twice.

They're based in Southend so have an Essex crew who I ended up standing around with as they were just as confused about which LCY gate we'd be going from as I was. They were chatting away and offering me mints, talking about BA and their maintenance issues hence them being called in. Once on the flight they kept coming back to the front row and offering us more drinks & snacks.

They make a nice change from BACF, especially on a quieter flight.

Indeed Ryanair does - once the paid extra for priority boarding boarders have got on. And even then it is still first come in that cohort.

At LGW in August they sent the priority boarders down the jet way then us non payers.

A priority boarder arrived late but they only let her join the end of the queue on the jetway and not escorted down to the front. Indeed the minder said something like 'this is the best I can do'

Not that it made much difference as we all had allocated seating.

What caused issues on the plane was people boarding the plane at the wrong door.!

Last time I flew from LCY to EDI there was an aircraft change to a charter plane from WDL Aviation, so had the slightly odd experience of an entirely German crew running a UK domestic flight.

That plane is close to its 30th birthday now (had it some months back ex-GLA when it was 29 years old)

Well was on the flight up the BA2216 from LCY and it certainly wasn't free seating. Got the text and email last night from BA advising of the change so surprised the flight down wasn't equally advised of the change. Managed to move from 6D (E190 window seat) to 9F at the check in this morning. Couldn't remember where the window seat on the 146 aircraft is missing but from looking this morning it seems to be row 6.

Hi,

By way of update,

We did not get an email advising of change of plane ( even the self service machines said an E190)

It was a Jota Aviation BAE146

Lots of people having hand baggage check at the gate

Standard priority boarding (ie gold/Silver) so got the bulkhead at row 2F but less legroom than the E190

3 abreast and the window seat felt more cramped by the window than on the E190

Fairly light load so 2E middle seat was free.

Standard BA trolley service on board.

Aircraft was G-SMLA IIRC

We arrived at LCY from the west so we had a close up view of Canary Wharf and the 02 from the windows.

Landing was firm.

Overall a good flight.

Regards

Ryanair have allocated seating and have done for a while. They're all posh now!

Good stuff.

Does my memory serve me correctly that 146s have several rows (beneath the wing) which have tiny overhead lockers thanks to the recessed roof?
