Aren't your calculations based on an unrealistic level of precision about the timing of the C check? In the context of when these checks need to be done, and the variability of all the factors involved, the difference between the suggested return date of LEB and the departure date of LEC (21 September and 1 October) is negligible. I would have thought that the availability of space at the SIN contractor alone would be more important than those 9 days.

Absolutely. I was just trying to illustrate that Sigwx's suggestion that there would be a one in one out process wasn't going to happen - although it may occasionally by chance !

I wonder if there had been (or will be) any future large A380 order then inhouse hanger mods would be deemed financially viable for heavy checks at ie CWL or LHR.

Does it actually illustrate anything? I could see how, in theory, BA might book the centre for a series of C checks back-to-back, even if some of them end up being done a little earlier than they strictly need to be. Time since delivery date doesn't determine when a check needs to be done. BA might, in theory, have been managing aircraft use to make the chronologically newer aircraft reach their C-check points faster, so that back-to-back checks can be done like that.

We here just don't know. We have no information about that. And so we're in no position to say whether the plan outlined by Sigwx (who I think is in a position to access internal information) would or wouldn't work.

We've already seen XLEA returning over two months before XLEB went out - so Sigwx's suggestion has already not happened.
For a perfect one in one out scenario, you would want the delivery dates spaced 3 weeks apart (the length of a C-check) - but the delivery dates are so wildly different, that it's really hard to see (even with differential a/c hours and sending an a/c off early) how a regular one in one out process could happen.

As I said, it might occasionally happen by chance - and in fact the best opportunity is actually XLEB/C in a couple of weeks time !

Perhaps the most efficient process would be for BA Holidays to develop an attractive three week Far East vacation package that would sell to a 380 full of passengers as needed.

Genuinely attractive or a manifest error?

It could certainly look like an error if they discounted the fare by what it would cost to fly there empty anyway.

the best chance BA had of doing a swapover (considering the original delivery schedule) was XLEB coming home, and XLEC going out ... but they didn't do it.

Also, XLEB returned as a positioning flight - rather than as an additional service. I guess there's more chance of the sector to SIN for maintenance being operated as an additional service (as they did with XLEA).

does that mean that they will never do a swapover ... that they will always want to get the previous aircraft back to LHR before the next one is sent out ?

If the A380-800neo or A380-900 is developed and the economics of the aircraft are decent, there could be a few orders to replace 747s in a capacity-constrained LHR

I'd love to see this happen. The 380 is far superior to the 747 in my experience. Admittedly I haven't flown on the 787 or 77W yet.
