Thanks for keeping the thread going in my absence, I've been snowed under with work and illness so have missed a couple of these. Next one looks great though:

Thursday, 12th January 2017, BA Waterside HQ
PROGRAMME:
16:30-18:00 | Registration & BA Heritage Museum Visit
17:15-18:00 | Sponsored Networking Reception
18:15-19:30 | Lecture “RAeS School Build-A-Plane Project”
19:30-20:00 | Q&A Section
The event is themed with “Inspire the Younger Generation” and the lecture is titled “RAeS Schools Build a Plane Project”. The lecture will be given by Oliver Vass, who was one of the original participants at the first SBAP Challenge. Oliver will speak about his experiences in building the two-seater Rans S-6 Coyote II microlight “G-YTLY” aircraft and his opportunities afterwards while taking the plane to airshows, including the Farnborough International Airshow, BBC News and numerous STEM activities across the country.
Boeing UK will be kindly sponsoring the evening and there will be a pre-lecture networking reception at Theatre foyer, as well as opportunity for attendees to visit the BA Heritage Museum situated within BA Waterside Corporate Headquarters near the Lecture Theatre.
We are also delighted to welcome Professor Chris Atkin - President of the Royal Aeronautical Society to attend the event as well as senior representatives from British Airways / International Airlines Group / Boeing and other local businesses.

For convenience, I've created a wikipost to summarise the next talk; if you're planning on attending some or all of the activities, please add a note to it.

This post archives the 9 February 2017 event that was in the wikipost.
Next event: Professor Keith Hayward FRAeS, Airspace Sovereignty: The Loss of MH17 - An Avoidable Tragedy?
Thursday, 9th February 2017, Red Triangle Theatre, BA Waterside HQ
The vulnerability of commercial airliners to missile attack has been evident for many years. Most attention has focused on the dangers of man portable missiles (Manpads), especially in the hands of terrorist groups. Yet the most serious incidents involving missile attack have been from longer range systems controlled by recognised armed forces - or at least under their nominal direction.
Professor Hayward will consider the loss of MH17 alongside two other cases, the Iranian Airbus shot down by a US cruiser and the Korean Airlines B747 destroyed by a Soviet fighter. Prof Hayward will then consider the implications of MH17 for the routing of commercial aircraft over conflict zones and the responsibilities of national and international agencies in advising and directing any diversion of traffic.
Prof Hayward will end by speculating on possible future areas of danger, specifically China’s claim to sovereignty up to the so-called “Nine-Dash Line” in the South China Sea.

An email from an unrelated organisation reminded me of these talks, and prompted me to look up what is scheduled. The next two talks about which there is firm information are now in the wikipost.
There is a further talk that may be taking place at Waterside on Thursday 8 March 2018 on Silver City Airways, but the RAeS' website is giving confusing information about this at present.

Commercial Viability of Ultra Long-Haul Operations
Anybody else going to tonight's talk ?
The lecture, entitled, “The Commercial Viability of Ultra Long-Haul Operations: Evidence from Qantas’ Perth-London Service”, will be presented by Linus Benjamin Bauer (MRAeS), an Independent Aviation Consultant. This lecture is based upon recent academic research and will be the first time to be presented in public. - by utilising data collected from the Qantas ultra-long-haul B787 service, the speaker drew some very interesting insight into this ever-emerging subject in the first time.

apparently he's giving the same talk in quite a few more branches of RAeS ... so maybe he doesn't want people to read it before he's finished presenting it ?

They've posted a summary of the event on their website:
"At an 82% load factor, the Qantas service is just 2.2 points above break-even. The fuel cost is up to 30% greater than one-stop flights, making the viability particularly susceptible to increases."
"Bauer concluded that ultra long-haul services will remain a niche, on possible routes such as southeast Asia to North America, Australia/New Zealand to North America, Perth to European cities such as Paris/Frankfurt/Manchester or Istanbul to Sydney."

Agree it is a shame it is not online. I get these emails and was going to post but BOH beat me too it! Sadly cannot make this one (diary conflict and partly because it is a shlep up to London).
I have attended RAeS events both online and also in 2019 (IIRC) the one at Waterside with Alex Cruz. They are always well organised, well compered, well attended and invariably one gets insights into some stuff that does not appear in the ‘regular news’.
