My Avios balance, which was 46,418 yesterday, is suddenly zero.
Under recent transactions, there's an entry that says "ex gratia" and the balance column says "-46,418".
What the heck?!

Your account is likely suspended and being investigated.

And a totally incorrect use of the term 'ex gratia' which is a payment made without admission of liability.
E.g. BA giving someone avios because the IFE didn't work would be ex-gratia

Totally. BA use ex-gratia for temporarily withdrawn avios (audits), purchased avios, transferred avios, none of which are really ex gratia at all!

Same has just happened to me.
I called BAEC, answered a few security questions, and was told my Avios will be reinstated soon.

They told me that they suspected my account had been breached somehow.
I asked if this had happened because I made a complaint today! Apparently not
