Yet another standby question - upgrade to CE?

I understand that there is no same day standby (as we understand it in the US) on BA when flying on economy tix. But BA website says that a Club Europe ticket includes "Free changes on the day of departure provided changes are for same date/cabin/route/airport"

2 questions:

1. Everybody agree that CE tix allow you to show up at airport and get on an earlier flight, same day, same route, at no cost if the seat is available?

2. What if you buy an economy ticket and then buy the upgrade to CE? Once you're holding the CE ticket (even via upgrade) do you then have the right to standby?

Thanks

I can only answer 2.: It depends. When you pay the fare difference plus change fee to upgrade into a flexible booking fare - yes. When you just get a proactive upgrade offer ("pay 70 to upgrade") this puts you into a totally restricted fare class - essentially use it or lose it.

Always look at the underlying fare rules...

It depends on the fare bucket. Some CE tickets have much less flexibility than EuroTraveller ("ET", economy class) tickets.

By the way, some ET tickets will allow you to change flights (including on the same day) as you wish, e.g. fully flexible tickets, for instance, in Y bucket.

1. Absolutely not. If they say that it is false advertising. Flexibility and class of travel are entirely dissociated and many ce tickets allow no change and many others only for a fee.

2. Absolutely not. If you mean full fare difference, see 1., if you mean Poug upgrades it's even worse as those upgrades make your ticket fully inflexible regardless of the underlying condition of the original fare.

The only tickets that would give you free same day changes are flexible ticket in Y and C (including the y "semi flex" range with same day changes included)

Can you point to where it says this? AFAIK, this is only likely to appear on the price quote page if the fare being quoted for is one that qualifies for this.

There are many CE tickets that are totally inflexible. No changes, no refunds; in other words, travel or bust.
