Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under Ł300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under Ł500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for Ł520

Hey All

Happy new year!

I think I am going mad. I have booked TPRs before and priced them up on ITA matrix before but I seem to be getting some crazy prices.

This below is what I put in to ITA for a DUB-LAX return, I have tried June, July, November and I am getting anything from 2,500 euro upwards, I don't understand where I am going wrong. Any help would be really appreciated. Thanks!

Out leg: AY HEL BA LHR BA JFK AA PHX AA

Return: AA PHX AA JFK BA LHR BA

Just put the connection points in at first, don't specific carrier. You can restrict to oneworld like this:

LHR JFK PHX / alliance oneworld

Try without HEL on the outbound as well.

What specific dates are you trying? Are you within the trave dates and minimum stay of the sale fare?

I am just thinking maybe drop the specific airlines(you might have been unlucky and hit days with limited availability or something). Instead of the airlines in specification do: HEL LHR JFK PHX / ALLIANCE ONEWORLD

Sale fare windows are a frequent trap ... sometimes they're only one week, as I have discovered.

No idea whether I'm right or not, but I tend to use "Find Cheapest Fare" first, to get an idea of where the 'Sale Windows" are before digging deeper.

Thanks- I got it to work for 95% - the bit it has not picked up is the LAX-JFK in A as ITA matrix has done. AA.com has priced it in I for the same price. Has anyone else managed to get the Transcon in A as per ITA matrix? SHould I reserve then phone AA and see if they can change the fare code?

Getting transcon LAX-JFK in A on a business class fare (starting I.......) is generally a glitch - many of us managed to book it, but most fare rules do not allow it. If you give us the precise fare you are looking at I can pull the booking classes (required and permitted) for your fare, dates and flight numbers from expertflyer.
Regarding question 2 - SHould I reserve then phone AA and see if they can change the fare code? That would almost certainly not be possible after ticketing is done - especially if ITA matrix suggests A due to some glitch.

You may wish to use dutch_122 in that case. I have similarly struggled to get ba to price an exDUB to include A on a JFK-LAX when itamatrix shows it.

Have you tried phoning AA?

It worked for us ... nice helpful lady in Fiji, who said "Awesome" every time I added a sector. And the price was what Matrix said. I will admit they were all AA sectors, but surely worth a try?

Same applies to other posters.

A half-decent short European run is available on most weekends in the first half of the year: JER-LGW/LHR-HEL and return, with 1 or 2 day stay in HEL for GBP444 in CE (GBP1.85/TP). It's possible to do it on the weekend and overnight in HEL.

I have added this to the wiki.

I checked the rules and it seems I is required and A is permitted(provided I is not available) on the transcontinental. I checked AA32 on your date and I is available, so not sure why ITA is suggesting this itinerary - I have seen it happen before though and even booked one myself with MIA-LAX in A on B77W.
I booked similar glitch using BA Gold line, but dutch122 is probably a better call given your unsuccessful with booking this so far.

Ok. I have never done this before. Sorry if this sounds like a really stupid question. If one is looking for maximum tier points for minimum price, what do you type into the Matrix search engine, since it asks for your destination and the destination isn't important to me. In fact, what I need to find out is what destination would give me the maximum tier points for the lowest price.

This really is a difficult question to answer because generally one should have an idea of where to go. As such, Matrix won't be of much help. I would suggest looking at the beginning of the thread for suggested runs. A final destination of HNL depends to be the most popular as a lot of tier point legs can be included, that is, multiple routings to HNL.
