Need a year-end TP run (ex-LON) to make / retain status?

Some tips for searching for the year-end TP run for newcomers, the below is indicative only, but hopefully provides a bit of guidance for relatively straightforward runs ex-LON. Prospero's guide to using ITA matrix in post 3 (here along with these ideas, might come in handy. Feel free to share results, problems or general questions in the thread as these may not always work and there might be better deals out there...

For overnight trips remember to check BA and Iberia for their flights and hotel option as well, can get hotel for almost no extra cost at times

Need 80 TPs or less
Club Europe return somewhere close by is best - DUB, AMS and JER usually cheapest. AMS and JER easier than DUB for an immediate turnaround. The BA.com low fare finder can be very useful.

If you need as few as 45 TPs you might consider booking economy flights and hoping for a proactive online upgrade offer - but they're not guaranteed to materialise (so not one if you have no more time left in your TP collection year)

Or a slightly more interesting fun run

Need 85-120 TPs
Iberia flights via MAD to regional Spanish airports will get you 120 TPs as the domestic Spanish flights are 20 TPs in business. Under £300 including hotel can be available. Check BIO, GRX, VLC, BCN, SVQ etc. Example here

Need 125-160 TPs
Take a look at the shorthaul plus routes earning 80 TPs each way in business listed in the first post (here) MLA, IST, HEL and RAK are usually available. If time sensitive take a look at BA flight and hotel option to HEL, where you can usually get the last BA flight out on a Saturday, airport hotel and first return Sunday for well under £500.

Alternative options include positioning to JER and flying JER-LGW-XXX (AMS usually works well and avoids switching airports)

Need more than 160 TPs
You'll most likely be heading north then - OSL or VLL via HEL will get you 240 TPs, as will JER-LGW/LHR-HEL e.g. LHR-HEL-OSL for £520

I need a Tier points run of around 380 to get to Gold before 4th Dec Not fussy where to or positioning, ideally a midweek and happy to include an overnight if needed. Any ideas for current routes or offers.

I need another two BA flights to keep my membership for 2016 - I have only done one BA rtn this year with the other tier points collected from AA and others.

What is the shortest (in time) and best value rtn flight I can do on BA from either LGW or LHR including turnaround time?

LGW-JER is a good one, but there are lots of options. Have a look at the 'Find our cheapest fares' tool on BA.com.

Welcome to FT. You may get an official ambassadorial greeting in the near future.

A few things to consider from your post. You refer to 4th December - BAEC collection years end on 8th. (Just in case this gives you a little more flexibility.)

If you are wanting midweek then you are going to pay substantially more for this. Saturday night away does reduce the cost significantly. As a current silver status I would assume that you have some avios. Have you considered the current ex-CPH offers in CW which allow you to part pay with avios. 30k avios will reduce the cost to £401 - that's the latest figure being quoted on Headforpoints to JFK. This will scope you 360TPs and give you a reasonable proportion of avios back.

You may get a better deal by booking as a holiday with BA. By adding a hotel and /or car you may not need the Saturday night may option.

The other option I can think of at the moment is some nested flights on the JER/LGW/AMS route. 2 of these will gain you 320TPs plus whatever you can get from the positioning flights. You may be able to do this in two days on consecutive weeks. For example.

Ticket 1. Tuesday - positing flight LGW/JER
Ticket 2. Tuesday - JER/LGW/AMS
Ticket 3. Tuesday - AMS/LWG/JER
Ticket 1. Tuesday - JER/LGW
Ticket 4. Wednesday (week 2) - positing flight LGW/JER
Ticket 3. Wednesday - JER/LGW/AMS
Ticket 2. Wednesday - AMS/LGW/JER
Ticket 4. Wednesday - JER/LGW

So you would do 2 x JER/LGW/AMS for 160TPs each, with 2 x positing flights for 10tps each in Y, or you could do 2 of these in J for a further 80TPs which would see you gain 410TPs in total.

There may be other ways of doing this, and not entirely sure if you can do these flight combinations in a single day. It might just be easier to try and do some nesting flights on LHR/HEL instead

To add to Ldnn1's post, AMS is also a good option in terms of time and money. Remember, when booking you need to do so as two singles or you will have to contend with MCT.

If you don't need tier points and only need the BA metal...... why not do a day trip? Usually £80-100 return and sorted in one day.

Hi

I recently booked CPH - JFK (£403 +30k avios) for July next year; it wasn't really booked as a TPR but given I'm there for 7 nights I am considering a run to help me retain gold; I have always booked via BA sales for previous runs so not sure on US sales - where is the best place to look and what for instance would JFK-LAX- (and perhaps HNL) cost in business/first in a normal sale?

thanks

Tim

Looks like I'll reach Gold this collection year (woop!!!), just found out I need to go to Atlanta for a week next Sept. Any ideas how I can maximise TP, particularly on the way out? I'm assuming I'll go ex-EU, and on the way back will just go ATL-LHR-EU-LON.

Constraints are that I'll need to leave the uk either Friday night after work / Saturday morning, and need to be in Atlanta by Sunday evening ready for a Monday morning work start. I'll be heading home on the Friday evening after work.

Thanks!

You will find that the better exEU deals require a Saturday night at your destination. Without that it will not be cheap.

As long as it's cheaper than going direct in F from LHR then TPs are more important than the money in this instance. I'm struggling for ideas as I can't see where to fit in a couple of extra >2,000 mile segments - thought about flying in to JFK (or somewhere else east coast), then somewhere trans-con over 2,000 miles that is itself 2,000+ from Atlanta, but can't figure that bit out.

That shouldn't be a problem with Lucanesque's timings. He could either position on Friday night or do a back-to-back on Saturday morning and still be in ATL by Saturday night, even adding in an extra stop or two for extra TPs.

A quick search on Matrix shows e.g. GOT-LHR-JFK-CLT-ATL is doable in a single day (positioning the night before) for £1682 return. Similar prices ex-Norway.

Also note the Sat night rule usually only applies to the first transatlantic sector, so he could e.g. fly to NYC on Saturday, stay the night there and then carry into ATL the following day if desired, without breaking the rule.

[Edit to add further to Lucanesque's second post above:]

The ex-GOT itinerary is also available in F for £2500.

You most likely won't be able to get a transcon in there for ATL because it will exceed MPM. However you could add in a connection in HEL to maximise TPs at the same price. GOT-HEL-LHR-JFK-CLT-ATL return would get you 760 in J / 900 in F.

[Further edit:]
Notwithstanding the MPM limit, what you can do (at least on Matrix) is e.g. GOT-LHR-JFK-PHX-PHL-ATL return which prices at ~£4100 by combining a GOT-PHX fare with separate domestic F fares on the same ticket. Or GOT-LHR-JFK-LAX-CLT-ATL for ~£5100 and more transcon comfort. Both get 1460TP. Hardly the cheapest TP runs by any means but if your budget limit is an F fare ex-LHR then you may have quite a lot of spend to play with!

Don't think you'll be able to make that work. The only West Coast - ATL is from LAX but that comes in just shy of 2000 miles.

Excellent, thanks for the ideas and the point about the MPM is a good one as I think that's why I couldn't get SVG-LHR-NYC-YVR-ATL to price up.
